Adaptive Sailing Instructor
Pleasant Bay Community Boating is a 501c3 non-profit that offers boating, marine education, and environmental stewardship opportunities to residents and visitors to the Pleasant Bay area. We are dedicated to serving all members of the community including those with physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities, as well as under-served families and at-risk youth. We offer youth and adult sailing lessons, community outreach sailing experiences, adaptive boating, marine science camps and hands-on activities, and boat rentals. Our fleet includes Flying Scots, Sunfish, 420s, Catboats, Kayaks, Lasers, Optis, and a solar-powered floating classroom.
PBCB is looking for Adaptive Sailing Instructors to support our overarching objective of the development and promotion of sailing for all and become an essential member of our team. Ideal candidates are excited to share their passion for sailing while providing personal growth opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Our Sailing Instructors will be confident with our fleets, hold safety as a top priority, and act as role models on the bay. They are motivated, flexible, upbeat, organized, and able to think on their feet.
Responsibilities:
Provide a positive sailing experience by highlighting the sailor’s abilities.
Be prepared to modify sailing instruction to meet the varying needs of individuals with diverse abilities and backgrounds.
Become familiar with our program offerings and be able to answer customer questions.
Report issues with boats, students, renters, curriculum, etc. to appropriate senior staff.
General Skills:
Maintain a professional and fun demeanor
Work alongside senior staff and other instructors to make sure sailors are learning, progressing, and staying safe
Make small adjustments to teaching and equipment use as needed, depending on the sailor’s strengths and challenges, and communicate any larger resource needs with the Adaptive Program Coordinator
Friendly, outgoing, organized, responsible, hardworking
Always model respect for the water, each other, and our equipment
Follow all PBCB policies and guidelines
Requirements:
You must be 18 or older by June 24, 2024.
Strong background in sailing required, experience with the boats in our fleet preferred
Able to work outdoors.
Experience teaching sailing and willingness to work with people of all backgrounds required.
Experience working with people with disabilities preferred, but open-mindedness required.
US Sailing certifications strongly considered; current CPR/First Aid required.
Any additional certifications or experience related to sailing, powerboating, boat maintenance, leadership, working with children, or water safety will be strongly considered.
Availability for the duration of our summer programming required: June 17 through August 16, 2024.
Employees are given a complimentary boat rental pass for off duty use.
$20/hour for US Sailing Level 1 Instructors.
