Position Summary
Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, the Music department seeks a full-time, 1 year term teaching intern to work with the department as an orchestra intern, educator and Symphonia orchestra conductor. Candidates should be interested in being part of a collaborative group of teachers and working with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community.
Position Requirements
We are looking for a dynamic candidate who will be an active participant in the academic, athletic, co-curricular and residential programs at the Academy.
This position provides aspiring teachers the opportunity to work closely with a mentor and other experienced faculty members across campus. Enthusiasm for working with adolescents both inside and outside of the classroom is essential. Providing extra help, advising, working as dormitory faculty, and assisting with extracurricular activities are integral parts of the job.
The Music Department seeks a passionate and highly motivated orchestral conductor/educator to join the department as the Symphonia orchestra conductor and teaching intern. The orchestra intern will assist the director of orchestras in all the artistic, teaching, and organizational areas of an extensive program with three orchestras - auditions, sectional rehearsals, rehearsal preparation, and preparation and marking of parts. The orchestra intern will direct the Exeter Symphonia (an intermediate string orchestra), will coach several chamber music groups in the instrumental chamber music program. and co-teach the Chamber Orchestra (an advanced group of strings and winds).
The ideal candidate will bring orchestral conducting skills, excellent musicianship, a knowledge of diverse musical repertoire, initiative, and a desire to work with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community. The candidate should also have skills in arranging music for different levels. They would have a desire to work with students on building fundamental skills, such as string or wind technique, and knowledge of different styles of music. Additional opportunities exist to gain experience working collaboratively with other ensembles including campus choirs, the concert and jazz bands, and small contemporary music groups. The candidate should be comfortable in the classroom setting as well with opportunities to teach music theory or music appreciation courses.
