SUMMARY OF POSITION 

GMM Pfaudler US Inc. is a leading supplier of highly engineered, critical equipment and process systems for energy, chemical and industrial markets. GMM Pfaudler’s Systems Group designs and constructs process systems including Wiped Film Evaporator (WFE) Systems, Reactor Systems, Column Systems and Temperature Control Units (TCU’s). 

The Project Manager will be in the Systems Group at GMM Pfaudler in Rochester, NY. The PM will be assigned to the Systems Project Execution Group to execute projects. The PM handles a broad range of responsibilities related to the process and mechanical definition, design, construction, and commissioning of custom chemical processing systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Essential duties include those listed below. The duties may be modified and/or other duties may be assigned, as necessary.

For large projects, the PM manages the project and also reviews/approves the work done by Project Engineers (PEs) assigned to the project. For small projects, the PM performs typical process/project engineering activities for the successful execution of large capital projects for process systems in GMM Pfaudler’s Systems Group. Activities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Participate in project meetings, model reviews, hazard reviews, etc.
  • Generate meeting reports, maintain the Technical Query Register (TQR), maintain the project schedule, execute customer and vendor document transmittals, review customer specifications, maintain project files, etc.
  • Define, estimate and implement project changes.
  • Work with the customer representatives and Systems Application Engineering to define the project requirements such as applicable standards, regulations and physical and process requirements to establish a Project Basis of Design.
  • Work with GMM Pfaudler Original Equipment Engineering Group and Operations to ensure any GMM Pfaudler equipment for the project is correctly specified, designed, fabricated, and completed on schedule.
  • Prepare Process Flow Diagrams and the associated Mass, Energy Balance and Stream Property Tables
  • Guide a CAD designer in the preparation of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Define and specify equipment such as heat exchangers, evaporators, tanks, reactors, pumps, vacuum equipment, etc.
  • Define and specify instrumentation such as sensors, transmitters, gauges, control valves and other final control elements, to measure temperature, pressure, flow, etc.
  • Define and specify piping items such as piping, valves, fittings strainers, expansion bellows, flex hoses, etc.
  • Guide a CAD designer to develop the project 3D model and to generate Equipment Layout Drawings, Structural Steel Drawings, Orthographic Drawings, Piping Isometric Drawings, Bills of Material, etc. and complete detailed checks of all drawings.
  • Prepare bid specification packages for equipment, instrumentation, pipe valves and fittings, pipeline items, structural steel, system piping fabrication and assembly, electrical wiring, controls, and control panels, etc.
  • Evaluate potential suppliers of purchased items, complete technical reviews of supplier quotations and prepare bid analysis documents and then prepare requisitions to purchase project items while complying with Systems and corporate review and approval procedures.
  • Travel to suppliers’ and fabricators’ facilities to inspect the work to ensure compliance with all requirements and drawings. Review supplier documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with requirements. Provide Procurement with notification of when the work is complete and acceptable.
  • Prepare project Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and, if necessary, Site Acceptance Test (SAT) documents.
  • Complete FAT and ensure all punch-list deviations are corrected.
  • Prepare project system operating manuals including: Basis of Design, Installation Instructions, Process Description, Description of Operation, Lubrication Schedule, Spare Parts List and manufacturers documentation specific to items provided, etc.
  • Travel to the customer site to provide engineering site support for Hazop reviews, 3D model reviews, installation, commissioning and start-up and site acceptance activities.
  • Provide post start-up support to customers as needed.
  • Complete post project reviews for knowledge of process design changes or system improvements and leverage this knowledge for future proposals and orders.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No direct supervision responsibilities. Will supervise/review work completed by PEs for the project as well as contract fabricator work.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum 15 years of experience is required with chemical process equipment design, project engineering and/or project management. Heat transfer, reaction or evaporation (distillation/separations) process design experience is required.

While most customer communications are through email, phone and online conference calls, occasional travel to customer sites, travel to travel to vendor and or customer sites is also required. Travel requirements are light (<10%).

Must be a self-starter, but also team player and focused on customer service.

Excellent communications skills required, both verbal for team, vendor and customer communications.

Good computer skills required:

  • Aspen Plus (or similar) for process simulations
  • Aspen Exchanger Design (or similar) for heat exchanger sizing
  • Microsoft Project (or similar) for project scheduling
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint for general use.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A BS in Chemical Engineering is preferred, but a BS in Mechanical Engineering with extensive, relevant process experience is considered. Chemical process system design engineering experience (along with related equipment, instrumentation, piping, etc. design) is required including mass transfer, or reaction and heat transfer design experience. Small project management experience required, with large project management experience a plus.

Must have ability to read and interpret customer technical documents such as engineering specifications and drawings including Piping and Instrument Diagrams and Process Flow Diagrams.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must speak and write English proficiently. Must have the following communication skills:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively (listen and speak) for technical discussions with customers, to understand their needs and explain GMM Pfaudler designs. Must also communicate effectively for technical discussions with vendors to define and discuss GMM Pfaudler needs.
  • Ability to write technically sound mechanical specifications and instructions.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Must have the ability to complete basic process design calculations (e.g. mass or volumetric flow rates, mass transfer, pressure, temperature, unit conversions, etc.) Must have ability to complete basic financial calculations (e.g. costs, margins, discounts, commission, etc.).

REASONING ABILITY

Must have ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must have ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee will also be required to enter the GMM Pfaudler or vendor workshop environments to track job progress, inspect equipment and system components and accompany customers during inspections. The employee will also be required to visit customer plant sites to view existing or proposed equipment installations and/or commission new process systems. The customer plant sites are typical chemical and pharmaceutical operating plant sites where the employee will be required to follow the plant site safety regulations.
