Individuals with previous experience in a veterinary clinic, daycare, or similar program are HIGHLY desired, but candidates with the appropriate attitude, ability to learn quickly, and desire to excel will be considered. The ideal candidate would be flexible in his/her scheduling including evenings and weekends. Reliability and dependability are a MUST.

Technician- Job Summary:

The veterinary technician assists the veterinarians to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients, and to aid the DVMs in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical tasks. They assist in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, immunizations, and euthanasia as well as client education, marketing, and inventory maintenance. Veterinary technicians must effectively interface with clients, veterinarians, front office staff, and other technical support staff members. The position requires strong technical and animal handling skills, and organizational and communication skills.

Physical Requirements (The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job.):

  • Position requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop and/or work in a bent position, and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
  • Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel.
  • Use strength or agility in restraining stronger, more active animals. Frequently lift and/or move up to a minimum of 40 pounds. Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to or over 150lbs with assistance.
  • Must be willing to work long or irregular hours under fast-paced conditions and in an outdoor setting.
  • Must possess visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people and understand written directions.
  • Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand and give information in person or over the phone.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Current and valid license as a certified veterinary technician or a minimum of 1 year working in an animal hospital.
  • Working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs and veterinary terminology.
  • Working knowledge of common animal diseases and their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment, and prevention.
  • Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in all veterinary procedures. Knowledge of sterilization techniques and aseptic techniques.
  • Critical thinking. Understanding logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments. Self-motivated.

Primary Duties:

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the practice and its services and policies. Have working knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations in order to answer client questions, provide education, and assist in marketing veterinary services such as flea/parasite control, dental cleaning, spay and neuter, senior care, and boarding.
  • Handle and treat patients with skill, compassion, and care for all out-patient, in-patient, diagnostic, and surgical procedures. Provide nursing care for injured or critically ill animals.
  • Accurately dispense and administer medications, vaccines, fluids, and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
  • Collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures and tests including hematology, serology and chemistry, microbiology/cytology, and urinalysis. Accurately record results in appropriate logs and in patient medical record.
  • Prepare patients, instruments, and equipment for surgery. Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian. Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, scopes, and breathing apparatus are in good working condition.
  • Assist in procedures utilizing diagnostic equipment including but not limited to radiology, ultrasonography, and electrocardiography.
  • Perform dental radiographs and prophylaxis. Record results of dental evaluations and procedures.
  • Handle emergency situations in a calm, controlled manner. Perform CPR, oxygen therapy, or other life-saving measures if needed.
  • Understand isolation and contagious disease protocols and treat affected and/or exposed pets. Clean and maintain isolation areas and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies. Conduct periodic maintenance and quality controls on all equipment.
  • Knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA. Follow established hospital safety guidelines.
  • Handle pricing questions in a manner that encourages clients to accept the veterinarian’s recommendation and create estimates.
  • Conduct self with integrity and commitment to the practice. Work efficiently and accurately to maximize productivity, taking initiative to find and complete tasks or assist other team members. Ensure individual actions support the practice philosophy,
  • Punctually follow designated work schedules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
