Supervisor: Laboratory General Supervisor

Job Summary: MUST BE A REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Employment at PetVet Dx Laboratory Services provides the individual the opportunity to participate in progressive laboratory veterinary diagnostic medicine, work in a fast paced environment handling a diverse caseload and provide personalized, compassionate medical care. Licensed Veterinary Technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the General Supervisor and the Office Executive. Licensed Veterinary Technicians are experienced team players who are dedicated to providing the high caliber veterinary care by assisting the doctors with technical functions, and also performing functions outside of the technical realm that enhances the practice. Licensed Veterinary Technicians demonstrate proficient technical skills, strong client relations skills, a solid work ethic and a willingness to learn in order to add value as an integral part of our quality care team.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures, on animal samples only, such as qPCR, sequencing, fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinanalysis, fungal cultures, draw blood for laboratory analysis.
  • Prepare samples for shipment to laboratory and prepare laboratory forms.
  • Prepare for office hours by stocking drawers in laboratory rooms and treatment area, by setting up reagents and supplies, and assuring that collection kits and equipment are ready. Provide reports for veterianraians and verify they are sent to them through the portal and eFax.
  • Be familiar with charges and prepare estimates for clients. Be familiar with record-keeping process and be able to enter charges for hospitalized cases and reconcile fee slips, flow sheets, and medical records.
  • Assist veterinarians with collection procedures, proper requisition documentation, result expectations, and basic report interpation.
  • Assist the customer services representatives when necessary.
  • Receive laboratory samples and check them for accuracy.
  • Ensure that the labels on the specimens coincide with the information provided associated with the label.
  • Check specimens for contamination before preparing them for testing.
  • Ensure that all analysis and preparation stages are documented properly.
  • Label prepared specimens in accordance to the information provided in the initial file and ensure that specimen bottles are stored with associated information files.
  • Manage data entry tasks associated with punching in patient specimen information in the lab database.
  • Ensure that each process of analysis and preparation is documented in accordance to the lab’s documentation guidelines.
  • Handle hazardous waste management activities in accordance to preset policies, protocols, and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure proper storage of specimens in the storage area and prepare specimens for shipping
  • Document and report any issues that may have arisen during the preparation process.
  • Handle container management in a time-efficient manner.
  • Communicate appropriately and inform physicians and health care facilities about the tests provided by the company and test results.
  • Records, compiles, and maintains records according to the Quality Management Plan to ensure states and federal regulations are upheld for all reagents, procedures, and equipment used in the testing process.
  • Assist in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new procedures and protocols.
  • Performs general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records.
  • Operates, calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots equipment notifies senior technologist(s), Supervisor, or Director when complex problems occur.
  • Maintains effective communication within the department and with other internal and external clinical and research professionals. To include the answering of telephone calls from client offices, the receipt and accessioning of specimens to maintain a high level of customer service.
  • Receive calls and input the patient information into the LIMS database and instruct patients on how to perform genetic tests requested.
  • The Accessioner will explain the types of tests conducted in the laboratory to other accessioners, physicians, and other health care facilities.

Physical Demands

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 40 pounds, standing and/ or walking continuously. There may me long periods of sitting involved. Infrequent exposure to hazards such as dust, fumes, or extreme temperatures, airborne or bloodborne pathogens, or allergens. Exposure to UV lights while some equipment is in use in the labs. Must have the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects. Online color-blind test is required.

The Licensed Veterinary Technician will be required to stand for long periods, and perform moderately heavy physical labor. The Licensed Veterinary Technician must be able to handle and restrain animals. The Licensed Veterinary Technician must be able to lift up to 40lbs unassisted. Licensed Veterinary Technicians must be able to work energetically for the entire assigned shift, sometimes exceeding 9 – 10 hours per day. The shift does not end until all duties are completed for the day. The Licensed Veterinary Technician should have no serious allergies to dogs, cats, birds, lizards, or common farm animals.

Qualifications

Hold current license as a veterinary technician in Lousiana and complete all requirements to maintain licensure.

Have a Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or BS) or higher. No experience required, 1-2 years’ experience preferred; Good organizational skills, attention to detail and follow-through skills, computer skills, and advanced typing skills.

  • Demonstrating knowledge of veterinary practices, procedures, and terminology;
  • Appropriately handling and restraining animals;
  • Reading medical charts and record procedures and treatments;
  • Demonstrating basic knowledge of medications and their side effects;
  • Professionally and compassionately addressing each client’s needs
  • Ability to multi-task and juggle multiple work streams (change gears quickly) while setting/managing priorities and providing consistent follow through.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise, understandable manner;
  • Effective listening skills and an eye for quality, accuracy and attention to detail

Controls Over Work

The Licensed Veterinary Technician works under the supervision of the General Supervisor; however, they will also receive direction from veterinarians, the Medical Director, and other managers on a daily basis.
