Senior Accountant / Bookkeeper

The leader in providing plastic, returnable pallets to commercial printers both large and small is seeking a Senior Accountant / Bookkeeper. This leadership position will guide the accounting team and help navigate inter-company transactions as the organization continues down its growth path.

Perfect Pallets, Inc. was founded in 1992 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and over the last decade we have developed 4P, the Perfect Pallet Packaging Program, to benefit its customers both environmentally and economically. As an International program, 4P provides service to printers and newspapers all across North America from coast-to-coast and operates as a never-ending cycle. Empty pallets are then delivered to commercial printers across the country. These printers will manufacture printed material to be placed on these plastic pallets and the product is sent to thousands of newspapers via independent motor carriers.

Job Summary: The role of the Senior Accountant / Bookkeeper is to direct accounting functions for operations through department leadership, employee supervision, administrative responsibilities, reporting and recording duties.

Major Responsibilities:

Department Leadership

  • Provides overall support to the Accounting Department to meet deadlines and initiatives.
  • Leads various accounting initiatives as part of annual goals processes related to continued improvement around all business and accounting processes in areas of internal controls, policies and procedures and process improvements.
  • Establish, direct and support the maintenance of accounting principles, practices and procedures through the Accounting Department.
  • Monitor and coordinate journal entries, reconciliations, controls and compliance.
  • Handle customer complaints; provide appropriate solutions and alternatives within the time limits; follow up to ensure resolution.
  • Preparation and analysis of taxes including payroll, sales and use, property, and business taxes.
  • Facilitate smooth coordination between the accounting department and other company departments to create position work flow.

Employee Supervision 

  • Supervise accounting employees by leading and directing their work and providing coaching and guidance as needed.  
  • Monitor and provide feedback to accounting employees based on performance, in conjunction with Human Resources.  
  • Oversee the activities of corporate accounting for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports.  
  • Oversee disbursement to ensure the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, purchase orders, petty cash, cash control, payroll processing and total corporate payroll tax compliance.  
  • Oversee the activities of accounts receivable to ensure the accurate and timely management of all counts receivable aging components including billings, cash receipts application, etc. 

Administrative

  • Participates in meetings and other company functions as needed.  
  • Works as a team with supervisors, co-workers, employees, clients and other persons as necessary to enhance the overall efficiency of daily operations.  
  • Maintains courtesy and professionalism during all interactions with the organization’s personnel, clients and other contacts.  
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment with respect to protecting the confidentiality of the organization. 

Reporting and Recording 

  • Participates in timely preparation of month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial statements.  
  • Prepares and analyzes budgets and financial operating reports and presents them to the top management team. 
  • Reports and records other information as necessary. 

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of relevant accounting software, preferably Sage Accpac, along with advanced knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) required as well.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Must also be detail-orientated, organized and methodical.
  • Must have the ability to communicate, both verbally and written, clearly and concisely and interact effectively at all levels across the organization and customer base.

Job Requirements: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Equivalent Required. 
  • Five to seven years of related experience is required. 
  • Must have a broad knowledge of accounting concepts, techniques, and GAAP principles. A strong understanding of balance sheet, income statement and cash flow with the ability to analyze and interpret financial data is also required.
  • Supervisory experience is also required and effective managerial skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff are required.
