Peraton is Hiring an Electrical/ Mechanical Engineer - Space Communications Near Greenbelt, MD

Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking an Electrical/Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Greenbelt, MD, to support our Space Exploration Network Services and Evolution contract working with electronics, mechanical systems, and radio frequency systems. This position will require primarily on-site work at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). 

 As prime contractor on the Peraton Space Exploration Networks Services and Evolution (SENSE) contract, Peraton is responsible for the operation, maintenance, sustainment and systems engineering of NASA’s worldwide satellite communication networks. Join the SENSE team to support NASA programs that integrate with state-of-the-art RF satellite ground communications systems and technologies. In this position, you will become part of NASA’s return to the moon, support new earth and space science missions, and launch vehicles. You will be an integral part of a world class team that builds and ensures NASA space-ground communications are reliable and meet mission requirements.

In this position, you will be responsible for supporting Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) for the NASA Goddard Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory (GGAO). The work supports VLBI operations, maintenance, and sustainment of GGAO antenna systems and subsystems.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Operation and Monitoring of GGAO antenna systems for VLBI operations.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing electronic, electromechanical, and radio frequency subsystems and components as necessary to ensure operability and maintainability of the VLBI systems.
  • Performing such tasks as replacing components and wiring circuits; repairing simple electronic equipment; and taking test readings using common instruments such as digital multimeters, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Providing hardware maintenance services which may include installation or modification and re-installation of existing equipment, preventive and corrective maintenance, and replacement of equipment as needed to maintain original hardware configuration functionality.
  • Performing mechanical preventative maintenance tasks on antenna systems which may include lubricating gears, gearbox oil changes, and metal corrosion control.
  • Applying comprehensive technical knowledge to solve complex problems by interpreting manufacturers' manuals or similar documents.
  • Ability to understand and follow operational and maintenance procedures without deviation.
  • Performing duties in accordance with all systems engineering and configuration management policies and procedures.
  • Comprehension and compliance with operations and maintenance documentation for GGAO VLBI systems.
  • Performing data acquisition and data transfer using Linux OS platforms.
  • Work well in a team environment and receive on the job training for VLBI Operations and Maintenance.
  • Working with the Customer to support VLBI technology development.
  • Write formal documents such as reports, procedures, and failure analyses.
  • Initiating purchase requests or procurements for system spares and/or maintenance repairs.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field and 2 years of related technical experience, or an AS degree and 4 years’ experience; without a degree, 6 years of related technical experience may be considered, which includes 2 years of technical training
  • 2 years of related experience with hands-on electronic and mechanical systems work
  • Experience following operational and/or maintenance procedures
  • Experience installing and maintaining mechanical equipment including gearboxes and motors
  • Experience using Linux OS based systems
  • Ability to physically lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to pass and obtain a Public Trust agency background check, and a Secret security clearance, if required by the program, which requires a U.S. Citizen

 DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience using test instruments to evaluate electrical components, to include digital multimeters, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and oscilloscopes
  • Experience integrating and configuring timing equipment for high precision control systems, data measurement, and processing systems/subsystems
  • Experience maintaining and repairing cryogenically cooled systems
  • Experience in radio frequency (RF) engineering
  • Ability to work in both a team environment and independently as a proactive self-starter
  • Excellent organizational skills such as prioritizing and completing multiple tasks within critical deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Target Salary Range

$66,000 - $106,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
