An employee in this job performs a variety of skilled duties operating and maintaining electrical power distribution systems and associated equipment with a voltage above 480 volts and below 23,000 volts. Work involves installing and maintaining transformers, switchgears, and emergency standby generators; repairing and replacing underground cables; identifying and troubleshooting problem areas; and installing, testing, and maintaining electrical machinery, devices and associated equipment. Work may also include operating and maintaining a medium voltage electrical substation. Positions in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are also responsible for installing, maintaining and testing truck height-sensing equipment; and installing and maintaining highway and sign lighting over limited access highways. Work is performed independently within procedural and safety guidelines and requirements. Work is reviewed by a Medium Voltage Electrician Foreman or an administrative or maintenance supervisor for adherence to standards.Duties include:Install, operate and maintain any, and all, electrical power distribution systems and associated equipment with a voltage between zero and 23,000 V. Installing and maintaining transformers and switchgear; repairing and replacing underground cables while working in underground electrical vaults; operates a lift or a bucket lift to make electrical repairs.Install new electrical circuits from the distribution, power, or electrical panels for air conditioners, ovens, vending machines, copy machines, computers, refrigeration circuits, and other electronic equipment. Posses the ability to read schematic diagrams. Maintain the ability to work on all univents, time clocks, motors, and condensate pumps. Possess the ability to properly use voltmeters, amp meters, and light testers in the course of work to check for continuity, voltage, and amperage. Check all new equipment installations to include balancing of loads. Troubleshoots electrical circuits in all campus buildings. Repairs, reinstalls, or replaces lamp posts due to vandalism or accidents. Determines if any shorts, grounding or other problems exist in circuitry. Repairs or replaces electric heaters, bad transformers, oven temperature controls, thermostats, burned wiring, and any voltage heater elements. Repairs, replaces, and sets modulating motors in univents, replaces elements, fuses, timers, motors, and contact points when repairing hair or hand dryers. Checks circuit-switches as needed. Identified or ring-circuits. Uses tools applicable to electrical work and returns them to proper location. Makes a daily report on record of parts and supplies used. Maintains work location in a neat and orderly manner.Utilizes wiremold and conduit accessories, used with the added circuits in buildings, bends both thin wall and rigid conduits. Uses proper tools for drilling holes in masonry or wood. Lays out work projects to include routing, wire size, and other necessary materials to complete job. Has ability to replace broken leads or switches on electrical motors.Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as due to bulb and tube life and vandalism, replaces ballasts, pulls new wiring in conduit in place of defective wiring, and replaces switches, duplex receptacles as needed. Repairs and replaces float switches and motorized control valves. Adjusts electric contactors working in conjunction with steam or pneumatic units and will install conduit and wire mold as needed.Thermolyne furnaces, automatic refrigerators, special lighting transformers, circuits for electronic piano and organs and other scientific machines. Installs circuits for coolers, humidifiers and thermostats in greenhouse. Repairs various types of appliances such as scrubbers, polishers, vacuum cleaners, fans, pumps, hand dyers and refrigeration equipment. Checks elevators for possible repairable conditions as a stop-gap until contracted repairman arrives. Assists in the safe removal of any individuals trapped in broken elevators using special technical knowledge.Maintains emergency power plants as necessary.
