Rail Transportation Faculty Research Lab Coordinator
The Rail Transportation Engineering (RTE) Faculty Research Lab Coordinator is a fixed term faculty member who contributes to RTE program's research, teaching, outreach, and operation activities while directing Penn State Altoona's rail transportation laboratory. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, staff, and students (graduate, undergraduate) to support, facilitate and coordinate all operational activities of the RTE laboratories.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Teaches up to four courses per year in the Rail Transportation or Civil Engineering disciplines.
  • Oversees ongoing undergraduate and graduate student projects involving the use of RTE laboratory facilities.
  • Supports and/or assists with RTE faculty research efforts.
  • Assists with RTE program marketing and outreach activities.
  • Serves as the point of contact for all laboratory activities in the RTE Materials, Trains, and Surveying labs.
  • Directs materials testing activities in the civil/materials lab.
  • Provides training as necessary to students on the safe use of all equipment in the RTE labs.
  • Coordinates the maintenance and repair of lab equipment.
  • Coordinates the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab.
  • Coordinates hazardous waste disposal.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards to ensure the safe and efficient lab operations in compliance with university regulations and standards.
Qualifications:
  • Must have a Master's degree in engineering, with a Ph.D. preferred, at time of appointment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Teaching or industrial experience in railroad and/or transportation engineering preferred
  • Experience with research laboratory operations or product manufacturing preferred
  • Ability to work independently and conduct daily operations in accordance with teaching and research plans and schedules.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and instrumentation preferred
