Lead Collections Clerk

Job Summary:

  • The Lead Collections Clerk is responsible for the timely and efficient collection of insurance accounts receivable within a specified Accounts Receivable section while providing assistance and knowledge sharing to Patient Accounting Representatives within an assigned unit.

Responsibilities:

  • Handles outgoing appeals and incoming audits.
  • Monitors and manages the collection of assigned accounts receivables.
  • Documents each collection activity in the patient accounting system.
  • Initiates calls to insurance carriers to facilitate a payment and follows up on a timely basis.
  • Prepares accounts for bad debt based on departmental procedure and management approval.
  • Recommends accounts for free care or discounts based on predetermined criteria.
  • Enters adjustments and/or corrections to accounts to update the Patient Accounting file.
  • Initiates processing of late charges, re-bills, insurance discounts, refunds, audit discrepancies, etc.
  • Responsible for dunning patients and insurance carriers.
  • Serves as an adjunct between supervisor and employees on day-to-day operations.
  • Assists employees in prioritizing duties and resolving work questions.
  • Oversees special projects.
  • Keeps abreast of employees assigned to tasks and the status of their workload.
  • Assists in training new employees and departmental procedures.
  • Adheres to the Quality Review and Productivity standards established for each unit o individual, recognizing that approved special projects will be calculated into the Productivity standards.
  • Achieves a minimum of 90% of the assigned productivity standard weekly (after a 6-week ramp-up period for new employees).
  • Achieves a minimum of 2.5 on Quality Reviews (after 3 mock QRs for new employees).
  • Communicates barriers that prevent reaching Productivity or Quality standards to department management.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required).
  • 2 years of experience in hospital patient accounting and/or an insurance company setting(Required).
