Job Summary:

The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Reporting & Business Intelligence is responsible for overseeing the team of approximately 40 people charged with providing accurate, reliable, and timely reports - from Epic and other systems
  • - to a variety of internal and external stakeholders. The AVP anticipates, spearheads, and executes new projects to improve the organization's analytics capabilities at scale. The AVP reports to the Vice President of Data.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Strategic Leadership:
    Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for reporting to meet the evolving needs of the health system while finding new efficiencies and opportunities for scale. Monitor and evaluate emerging reporting and data visualization technologies.
  • Team Management: Lead and mentor a team of ~40 reporting professionals, ensuring optimal performance, skill development, and growth. Create a cohesive and positive team culture with clear standards and goals.
  • External Registry and Regulatory Reporting: Ensure compliance with external reporting requirements and regulatory standards across all UPHS entities. Capture opportunities to increase reporting efficiencies.
  • Management of Reporting Resources: Optimize the allocation and deployment of PennDnA’s reporting resources, including staff and software, to meet the organization’ needs. Evaluate and recommend new reporting tools as needed. Look for opportunities to capture efficiencies and build scale. Leverage Epic reporting tools to optimize workflow and efficiency for Epic end users.
  • Ad Hoc Reporting: Oversee the development and delivery of ad hoc reports to meet the evolving needs of the organization. Ensure their accuracy, reliability, and usability. Maintain inventory management systems for reports and reporting tools to optimize resources.
  • Data Visualization: Lead the development of impactful data visualizations to facilitate understanding and interpretation of complex data.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with IS, clinical, research, and administrative stakeholders to understand needs, optimize reporting infrastructure, and help drive data-driven decision-making across the organization.
  • Continuous Improvement: Maintain technical expertise and serve as a subject matter advisor on reporting products. Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies. Implement improvements to enhance reporting efficiency, reliability, and user satisfaction. Track EMR incentive programs (e.g. Epic’s Honor Roll), evaluate potential benefits to Penn Medicine, and implement changes, when warranted.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required), preferably in Health Informatics, Business Administration or a related field.
  • 10 years of healthcare reporting, analytics or business intelligence (Required).
  • 5 years of experience leading teams and/or complex projects of scope (Required).

Skills & Abilities:

  • Expertise – Demonstrated knowledge of reporting and business intelligence, including reporting tools such as RWB, radar, and SlicerDicer. Able to create and maintain reporting standards.
  • People management: Strong supervisory and management skills. Demonstrated ability to develop individuals’ skills and expertise. Able to inspire top performance from teams.
  • Leader development: Ability to help rising leaders develop the skills, expertise, perspective, and relationships needed to succeed in leadership roles.
  • Communication skills: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Analytical thinking: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on driving data-driven decision[1]making.
  • Familiarity with healthcare: Knowledge of healthcare regulations, compliance requirements, and data privacy standards.
