PAVE Academy Charter School is Hiring an Art Teacher (Part-Time) Near Brooklyn, NY

Organization Description

PAVE Academy Charter School is a public charter school in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY. PAVE provides a K-8 experience that lays the foundation for a productive and choice-filled life. We build our students brick by brick, equipping them with the academic, social, and emotional skills that they need to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, overcomers and leaders in their communities.

PAVE educates 490 Kindergarten – 8th-grade scholars each school year. Across our student population, 82 percent of our students are eligible for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FRLP); 17 percent receive special education services, and 10 percent are English Language Learners (ELL).

Opportunity Summary

Enrichment Specialists work directly with an assigned group of approximately 20 students, to provide an innovative, enriching, engaging, safe, well-supervised afterschool program topic that is hands-on and project based. The Enrichment Program Specialist is responsible for planning and implementing lessons in their field of expertise and craft that meet PAVE Academy requirements for elementary or middle school aged students. Specialists are responsible for preparing students for a capstone project which will be presented to parents every semester. Enrichment Specialists are expected to support student learning with a growth mindset, establishing a positive relationship with students and use responsive classroom management. Specialists are responsible for preparing materials and requesting supplies. Mandatory PD will take place Sept. 11, 2023-Sept 15 3:30-6. The weekly schedule is Monday-Thursday Arrival time 3:30, Departure time 6:00pm and or Friday 12:30-3:30. Programming will launch Sept 15 and end June 7th.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Planning an enrichment course with hands- on activities activities that challenge students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Design and deliver a series of lesson plans for an enrichment activity aligned to the PAVE program model and culminating in a final project or presentation;
  • Collaborate with After School director & coordinator to provide a cohesive and fun experience for youth
  • Embed responsive classroom practices in lesson delivery/ classroom management
  • Prepare all materials before activities begin and facilitate a thorough clean up afterwards;
  • Encourage youth to positively participate in activities;
  • Serve as a role model while demonstrating professional behavior;
  • Implementing all health and safety protocols as required, including ensuring child safety and responding appropriately to any incidents;
  • Note: Enrichment activities that require materials/resources will be given a conservative budget on an as-needed basis.
  • You will supervise and engage students in recess activities outside
  • Attend field trips on a bus or train .

What You’ll Bring to the Team

  • A passion for your enrichment course and a relevant skill set.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the role's start date;
  • High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree or certification in related field preferred;
  • Ability to work in-person during all program hours required (Monday-Thursday 3:30-6pm) and or Friday 12:30-3:30
  • 2 years experience working with groups of youth, or similar experience preferred;
  • Ability to independently plan and implement lessons in proposed specialty area;
  • The ability to support students socially and emotionally, including addressing misbehavior when necessary aligned to responsive classroom
  • Exemplary social, organizational, and communication skills
  • A team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate with other enrichment teachers and academics specialists.
  • A willingness to ensure the well-being and safety of students
  • A growth mindset and willingness to listen, learn, and respond to feedback Director of After School Programming and coordinators
  • Relationship-building skills for students and other staff
  • The social skills necessary to speak with parents if the occasion arises.
  • Experience teaching in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
