INTERN, PROCESS SCIENCE – UPSTREAM (ONSITE)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Upstream (fermentation) Process Science team is a group of Scientists and Subject Matter Experts who specialize in the development, optimization, remediation, and transfer of the production processes used in cGMP commercial manufacturing of drug substance. This position is primarily a lab-based role which requires hands-on execution of upstream development experiments. This internship is a full-time and onsite position and has a term of 8 – 12 weeks over the summer.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates in activities related to continuous improvement projects for the business, including:
    • Characterization studies in shake flask production models.
    • Oxygen transfer studies for fermenter mass transfer characterization.
    • Media optimization in shake flasks and fermenters.
  • Qualification studies in benchtop fermenters.
  • Preparation of media and buffers to support lab experiments.
  • Executes experiments for upstream operations in shake flasks and fermenters.
  • Processes data entry, data analysis and maintenance of accurate experimental records
  • Interprets results and assists in study design for process improvements.
  • Supports set-up, operation, and sampling of bioprocessing equipment including shake flasks, fermenters, HPLC, and associated analytical equipment.
  • Communicates work through oral presentations and written documentation including presenting project results and conclusions at the end of the internship.
  • Adheres to all applicable regulations and requirements including compliance with internal SOPs, GMP, Health and Safety, WISHA/OSHA, regulatory compliance, company policies, and employment-related laws and statutes.
  • Successfully completes all mandatory Quality and Compliance training within required timeframes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Required:

  • A desire to work in the biotechnology industry and experience operating in a general lab equipment.
  • Detail-oriented team player with the ability to work independently, complete written and verbally assigned tasks following specific procedures, organized, strong time management skills, adapts to business needs, and a self-starter.
  • Excellent soft skills including a bias towards action, the ability and willingness to give and receive constructive feedback, is comfortable working within a diverse team, exhibits a consistently constructive attitude, and is adaptable and at ease with handling unexpected challenges.
  • Solid English language communication skills, both oral and written, are required for this highly collaborative role. Willingness and ability to clearly express opinions and ask questions. Comfortable actively participating in cross-functional meetings.
  • Proficient software skills essential including Word and Outlook; ability and willingness to quickly adopt other job-specific applications will be necessary.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of fermentation, cell culture, bioreactor operations, aseptic technique, cell separation, chromatography, and analytical instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis techniques (standard deviation, t-test, p-value) and design of experiments (DOE).
  • Experience with PowerPoint and SharePoint.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • In pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in the Biological Sciences or Biological Engineering (Cell & Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field) with a cumulative GPA ≥3.0.
  • Successful completion of sophomore year of undergrad education, including majority of general chemistry and biology series, and intends to continue education in the Fall.
  • Completed some laboratory coursework and familiar with types of hazards that can be found in a laboratory.

Preferred:

  • Successful completion of Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering course work with labs.

Offers are made within the base pay range applicable at the time. Your salary will vary depending on several factors including your qualifications and experience. No relocation or housing is provided for this internship.
