IT Database Engineer 

Exempt Position

12 Months

Purpose Statement

The job of IT Database Engineer is done for the purpose/s of analyzing departmental and individual requirements for data and programmed systems; designs, developing, implementing and maintaining applications; documenting system components and user instructions; and serving as a technical advisor to staff and other district personnel.

This job reports to Director of Information Technology or Designee

Essential Functions

Assists in the support of programming and data functions/systems for the purpose of communicating systems capabilities and improving work efficiency.

Assumes the principle role on all department programming and data activities as assigned for the purpose of ensuring ongoing availability of information to meet mandated requirements.

Assumes the principle role &/or serve on a team with other personnel throughout the district for the purpose of embracing technical & logistical directions from/to a colleague.

Deploys, installs, configures, troubleshoots, and maintains student information systems for the purpose of providing technical assistance, advice and support.

Designs deploys, installs, configures, troubleshoots and maintains data and programmed systems throughout the district and as assigned for the purpose of providing technical assistance, advice and support.

Interacts with students, employees, department staff, vendors, contractors and community for the purpose of cultivating supportive and informative relationships.

Programs and manages data solutions using a variety of APIs including commercial and open source systems for the purpose of allowing software components to communicate/interface with each other.

Programs and manages data on projects & initiatives throughout the district for the purpose of providing technical assistance, advice and support.

Supervises assigned personnel for the purpose of ensuring their department and individual performance objectives are met.

Trains and coaches others on data programs and systems throughout the district (e.g. site staff, students, department staff, community, district administration office staff and administrators, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring their ability to use new and/or existing district technologies and information systems.

Uses a variety of tools to program and manage data (e.g. Java, Flash, Linux, Apache, PHP, ODBC, XML, HTML, Sybase, etc.) for the purpose of manipulating programs to add customized features for end users' ability to access data as needed.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; utilizing pertinent software applications.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform advanced math; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: relational databases, record structures, media input and output devices; current generation programming methodology including object based design, operating systems, protocols, and programming languages.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with persons of varied technical knowledge and backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; working as part of a team; adapting to changing priorities; work in flexible shifts, including but not limited to evenings, nights, weekends and holidays; applying logical processes and analytical skills.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

Education: Bachelors degree in job-related area.
