Overview

The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District is a dynamic organization that is looking for a Safety & Security Director to lead its Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness team. As a key partner in enhancing the neighborhood and public spaces and contributing to safety efforts from the White House to Dupont Circle and 16th Street NW to 21st Street NW, the Golden Triangle BID works to enrich the neighborhood through its Ambassador cleaning program, public space improvements, safety and security, economic development initiatives, promotions, and outdoor events.

The Program

The Golden Triangle BID’s award-winning Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness Program works to foster a safe environment, contribute to neighborhood security, and assist businesses and individuals in preparing for all types of emergencies. Through daily communication and coordination, the BID has built strategic partnerships with numerous local and Federal law enforcement, emergency management, homeland security, and other public safety agencies, and has built trusted relationships with property management companies and businesses within the BID. These relationships allow the BID to be a conduit between public and private sectors before, during, and after emergencies.

The BID creates numerous training and educational opportunities that help improve neighborhood safety and security. When crime and significant incidents occur, the BID takes a key role in ensuring coordination and information sharing between stakeholders. Working together allows our neighborhood to be better protected and prepared.

Responsibilities

The Safety & Security Director will be responsible for leading the BID’s Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness programs. This Director will oversee strategic activities and implement tactically operational activities related to building and maintaining neighborhood safety and security.

The Safety & Security Director will lead the BID’s all-hazards safety, security, and preparedness programs. This will include using technology and cyber security best practices to protect the organization and continue program innovation. This will also include engaging with first responders, property managers, security directors, Golden Triangle Ambassadors, District officials, and other stakeholders. This position will develop and implement programs to address organizational and neighborhood gaps related to crime, emergencies, disruptive incidents, special events, and any other public safety concerns. Further responsibilities include:

  • Proactively provide guidance and support to property management companies and businesses (restaurants, retailers, nightlife operators, etc.) on security-related matters, such as security measures, safety tips, and crime prevention strategies to identify vulnerabilities and recommend security enhancements.
  • Oversee technology component of Operations and Safety, Security, and Preparedness programs. This includes alerting and messaging tools, radios and repeaters, camera systems, and other tools. This also includes the BID’s robust cyber security program.
  • Provide direction and leadership in the BID’s internal preparation, monitoring, and response to neighborhood emergencies, including leading the Golden Triangle BID Emergency Operation Center program training staff, developing plans and policies, and overseeing day-to-day Dispatch operations as well as activations of the Operations Center for planned and unplanned incidents and events.
  • Supervise staff, including the Safety & Security Coordinator and the Ambassador Dispatcher. Both of these positions are located within the BID Emergency Operations Center.
  • Develop and deliver innovative engaging internal and external training on a wide variety of safety, security, and emergency preparedness topics.
  • Develop, maintain, and exercise/test emergency preparedness plans and procedures.
  • Coordinate with first responders and private security officials in a variety of venues including, but not limited to Safety Council(s), BID membership meetings/briefings, safety walks with District officials, special event planning (e.g., Inauguration).
  • Analyze crime data to identify trends and significant incidents in the Golden Triangle neighborhood. Monitor the public safety policy environment identifying programs, policies, and trends that may impact the Golden Triangle neighborhood.
  • Work with MPD officials, detectives, and prosecutors to gather information regarding crimes and to proactively share security information and protective measures.
  • Work with property owners and District officials to conduct block-level crime strategy process with the goal of reducing crime in targeted areas.
  • Manage and conduct safety assessments and trainings at properties throughout the Golden Triangle neighborhood.
  • Manage Golden Triangle Safety Ambassador program. This includes developing components of the training program, specifying duties to the contractor, and gathering metrics and outcomes to meet internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Direct and manage special initiatives that enhance neighborhood security and
  • Oversee and strategically direct the Golden Triangle Homeless Outreach program. This program is staffed through a contract with a service provider.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in criminal justice, homeland security, or a closely related field. Master’s degree is desirable.
  • 8 Years of related work experience in Fire/EMS, law enforcement, criminal justice, corporate security, homeland security,
  • Experience as a first responder and/or working within the Incident Command System is desired.
  • Experience working in an emergency operations center is desired.
  • Experience in physical security, cyber security, and CCTV systems is highly
  • Ability to lead a diverse neighborhood safety team.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and interpersonal
  • Excellent oral communication and written skills, with particular attention to
  • Experience working with local government agencies and/or private-sector
  • Ability to be customer service focused, yet persistent and results
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and
  • Management experience required
  • Be able to work outdoors as needed to assess and address issues in the neighborhood.
