Job Title: Behavioral Health Counselor

Department: Behavioral Health

Reports To: Clinical Director & Executive Director

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Position Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $70,000-$90,000/Year

Education: Masters or Beyond

License: Current and up to date License to Practice mental health/psychotherapy in the state of Wisconsin.

Summary:

Provide necessary therapeutic and educational services to assist clients in understanding their mental health and/or substance use disorders. Uses a trauma informed approach to all services and provides specific treatment groups and family support and education. Assure compliance with all policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control, and all regulatory requirements.

Duties:

- Assist in the implementation of individualized treatment plans for clients

- Monitor and document client behaviors, progress, and responses to treatment

- Provide emotional support and encouragement to clients

- Assist with crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques

- Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure effective communication and coordination of care

- Facilitate group therapy sessions and recreational activities

- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for clients

Qualifications:

- Previous experience in a mental health setting is highly desirable

- Knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-9 coding is a plus

- Familiarity with behavioral therapy techniques and crisis intervention strategies

- Understanding of gender issues counseling and working with individuals on the autism spectrum

- Ability to provide care for patients with PTSD and other mental health conditions

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the Following:

1.Complete psycho/social histories and standardized assessments as determined and provide a clinical description regarding how issues impact client’s life, culture, and treatment,

2.Facilitate educational sessions on mental health, addiction and co-occurring disorders independently.

3.Learn and demonstrate an understanding of the 12 Steps as the apply to working with the SPMI population; be able to integrate 12 step principles in a therapeutic manner in individual and group sessions (If SUD/AODA is speciality or area of interest)

4.Demonstrate ability to engage clients in treatment and be empathetic and responsive to their needs in group, individual and other formatted engagement.

5.Facilitate group therapy sessions independently and professionally. Be able to work with a co-therapist or individually. Demonstrate ability to consistently engage clients therapeutically, and in a more in-depth level

6.Independently facilitate a family meeting professionally & competently. Provide family education and support as appropriate. Demonstrate ability to consistently engage family in services where appropriate.

7.Develop professional and objective treatment plans and reassessments; contribute to treatment team meetings in a meaningful way,

8.Be able to manage client cases from admission to discharge, including coordination with external sources such as community agencies and referral sources as needed.

9.Enter clinical data accurately into the various in-house and on-line health information systems and databases. Documentation must be accurate and individualized with no cookie cutter responses; be timely and clinically sound with limited use of jargon; use a DAP format in notes with an assessment and plan that is specific and individualized. Also include detailed description regarding how the client is being supported in group and individual sessions.

10. Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.

11. Be able to manage a full caseload.

12. Work collaboratively with all departments and peers. Communicate pertinent client information to other staff/departments as necessary.

13. Provide crisis intervention, as needed. Assist in the management of dysregulated clients.

14. As appropriate, participate in staff development program, sharing skills, techniques & tools with peers.

15. Attend Mandatory in-service trainings, and other meeting as required. Complete New Employee Orientation Training, CPI, CPR/First Aid and any other specific training assigned through the online training platform.

16. Be professional and ethical in demeanor and behavior; be prompt for sessions; demonstrate ability to engage clients in treatment; be empathetic and responsive to client needs.

17. Display a strong work ethic; be a team player.

Knowledge and Job Skills:

· Able to conduct individual, group and family therapy with adults who experience mental illness, substance abuse and/or co-occurring disorders.,

· Knowledge of and skills in treatment interventions that are evidence-based for people who experience mental illness, substance abuse and/or co-occurring disorders .

· Knowledge of trauma informed care and how to create a trauma informed environment.

· Knowledge of gender specific treatment.

· Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing strategies.

· Knowledge of confidentiality laws related to HIPPAand CFR 42 part 2

· Able to understand and treat clients with culturally diverse backgrounds.

· Able to listen, interpret and counsel in a tactful, objective, and effective manner.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills.

· Ability to tolerate and accept mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially challenged individuals.

· Able to provide treatment services for clients with HIV/AIDS, history of domestic violence, trauma and/or history of incarceration.

· Able to document client care in the timeframes required.

· Able to manage emotionally stressful situations.

· Able to work in a manner that will not endanger oneself, others and equipment.

· Time management skills.

· Able to maintain a good working relationship with staff and clients.

· Able to work as a team member and as part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team.

· Able to maintain accurate/ timely records.

· Able to organize time and tasks.

· Able to handle crises without instructions.

· Represent organization professionally when visiting public and agencies.

· Proficiency in typing

· Proficiency in Microsoft office and Microsoft windows

· Proficiency in applications of software including the EMR.

Mature tact and judgment required in dealing with staff, clients, families, outside agencies and general public. Experience in in developing individualized care plans. Ability to listen and be person-centered. Analytical. Detail oriented. Objective. Calm. Tolerant. Assertive. Open minded. Able to work under time pressure and with limited resources. Able to relate and work with people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA, federal and state mental health and drug and alcohol statutes, and other applicable regulations
