Oshkosh Community YMCA is Hiring a Full Time Lifeguard - Swim Instructor Near Oshkosh, WI

The Full Time Lifeguard - Swim Instructor will ensure safety and high quality experiences in YMCA pools and aquatics areas to all members, guests, and program participants. The Full Time Lifeguard - Swim Instructor will assist with member and participant needs, provide excellent customer service, and maintain a safe aquatics environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Average time spend is 75 percent lifeguarding and 25 percent instructing swim lessons or actual split may depend on department needs
  • Communicates and enforces aquatics rules and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Properly opens, performs daily tasks, and closes aquatics area each day according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Handles and resolves aquatics concerns and informs director of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  • Provides accurate, appropriate, and immediate responses to all requests by members/guests.
  • Works without constant direct supervision and remains at assigned lifeguard post for extended periods of time, as required.
  • Maintains positive relationships at all time, with members, participants, and staff.
  • Coach and mentor Lifeguard/Instructor staff regarding performance with positive, specific, constructive feedback.
  • Prepared to teach the assigned classes/programs. Greets and welcomes participants to class each day. All equipment and instructional methods are appropriate for the class.
  • Provide timely and accurate feedback to participants (or parents) about their progress and skills they need to work on.
  • Leave instructional area in a clean and orderly condition by ensuring all equipment is returned to its appropriate area.
  • Participate on our Aquatics Safety Cabinet to help guide and direct staff and staff training plans
  • Maintain required instructional certifications.
  • Assist Aquatic Director and Aquatics Coordinator with staff & YMCA member/program participant communication, to include but not limited to, policies, procedures, schedules, and progress reports.
  • Assist Aquatic Director and Aquatics Coordinator with staff coverage of unassigned shifts, communicating all policies and procedures to aquatic staff, and in developing and leading session-based Swim Instructor/Lifeguard in-services.
  • Maintain high-level of member service by answering questions and problem-solving member or staff concerns and issues.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Required (willing to train the right candidate!)
  • Y-USA Swim Instructor v6 Certification or Water Safety Instructor preferred (willing to obtain within the first 90 days)
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification preferred (willing to obtain within the first 90 days)
  • YMCA Lifeguard Supervision leadership certification (willing to obtain within the first 90 days)
  • Minimum three years of experience teaching lessons and/or organizing aquatic programs
  • Proven track record of sound judgment and good decision making; the ability to lead others; knowledge of aquatic programming; and the ability to communicate effectively—verbally and in writing—with participants, parents and caregivers, members, staff, and volunteers

  • Lift equipment and a small- to average-size child.
  • Remain in the pool area at all times.
  • Remain alert, with no lapses of consciousness, in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.
  • Recognize distress signals.
  • Support child or adult body weight in the water.
  • Remain in water ranging from 80–90 degrees for one to four hours.
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance, in normal and loud situations.
