The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager is responsible for the supervision and training pertaining to all aspects of sterile processing to include the decontamination, preparation packaging, sterilization and sterile storage while adhering to department policies and procedures. This position ensures personal and team competency in all sterilization processes, team compliance with quality control and repair, and management of equipment. The SPD Manager serves as a liaison between the Operating Room (OR) and Sterile Processing Department.
Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including, but not limited to: sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patients rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.
**Duties Include:**
* Directly supervises one or more employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with
the organizations policies and applicable laws. Addresses disagreements with staff to ensure a positive
work environment. Works closely with Human Resources on personnel issues. Reports critical personnel
issues (e.g., disciplinary actions and/or termination) to supervisor.
* Collaborates with Director of Nursing on staff coaching, counseling and disciplinary action for improved
performance, behaviors and productivity requirements. Promotes continued staff education.
* Conducts staff annual and periodic performance reviews with the established guidelines.
* Participates in hiring process by assisting in candidate selection and assisting with new employee
orientation within the department.
* Responsible for organizing and maintaining staffing schedules ensuring efficient coverage for
department needs.
* Maintains personnel and other direct expenses within unit budgetary expectations.
* Ensures personal and team competency in all sterilization processes by conducting quality control
checks. Participates and conducts staff and self-development meeting/in-services.
* Permanent member of the Safety Committee; must attend quarterly meetings.
* Responsible for maintaining a clean orderly work area.
* Works closely with Infection Control Coordinator to ensure proper sterilization practices are followed.
* Collaborates with Clinical Director on instrument budget of SPD and analyze need for instrumentation
and trays.
* Facilitates the timely ordering of instrumentation and supplies. Provides management with information
for forecasting future instrumentation/equipment needs.
* Works closely with OR Manager to bid for capital expenditures purchases according to department specifications. Information is then taken to the leadership team and the Board of Directors for approval
* Attends meetings, seminars and/or conferences as requested by the Director of Nursing
* Communicates all concerns, risk management issues, breakdown in protocol and constructive criticisms
to the Director of Nursing
* Responsible for following protocol and/or protocol changes outlined in departmental meetings.
* Required to follow OCR and departmental policies and procedures.
* Other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications Include:**
* High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
* One year supervisory or management experience in Sterile Processing or Operating Room specialty
preferred.
* Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards (Association for the Advancement
of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN), etc.).

finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls up to 12 hours per day. The employee frequently is
required to talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms,
and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
* The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and should do so in a sound and safe
manner. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision,
depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
