The Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Tax Economist – Economist 3 position. We are looking for a talented and detail-oriented individual to join our Director’s Office in the Research Section. This position is headquartered in our Salem office; however, the successful candidate may be eligible for in-state hybrid work. Hybrid work consists of generally working remotely and occasionally meeting onsite in a standard office environment.

In order to be considered for Department of Revenue recruitments, you must reside within (or be willing to relocate to) the state of Oregon.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Designs and constructs large scale and complex datasets for collection, storage, and retrieval of statistical information related to major tax programs, including data for administrative and operational analysis. Develops documentation to help other analysts understand nuances of the department's information systems.
  • Analyzes existing or proposed tax laws to determine their impact on revenue and to provide statistical summaries for public release.
  • Maintains familiarity with regional, statewide, and local social economic data as a part of economic forecasting or special studies.
  • Works on special projects relating to the effects of the Department's administrative actions.
  • Describes tax expenditures after review of legislation and statutes and estimate their revenue impacts.

This Is What You Need To Qualify
A Bachelor's degree in economics or a related field and three years’ experience doing economic research or econometric forecasting.
A Master's degree in economics or related field will substitute for one year of experience.
A PhD in economics or related field will substitute for two years of experience.

NOTE: Some positions may require an advanced degree in economics or a related field and be decided by the appointing authority at the time of recruitment based on the position requirements.

The ideal candidate will possess the following desired skills and attributes:

  • Demonstrated ability to work with complicated and imperfect real-world data.
  • Experience with data analysis and querying software, such as SAS, R, or SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Ability to dig into data to answer complicated real-world questions, such as questions about Oregon’s tax system.
  • Ability to ask detailed questions as part of clarifying requests for information or other analyses.
  • Ability to understand and analyze the impacts of law and policy decisions on the operations and outcomes of tax programs.

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect the additional 6.95%.
