Orange County Public Schools is Hiring a Carpenter Near Winter, FL

Overview

Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled to advanced trades work related to various installation, maintenance and carpentry repair tasks and projects for the school district.

Employees in this classification function independently, as assigned, or in a crew leader capacity for trades personnel engaged in various trades related facilities maintenance projects.

Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, new construction, outdoor structures, and interior facilities. Position provides lead worker instruction and assistance to lesser skilled district trades and facilities maintenance personnel, as well as coordination and delegation of project tasks.

Performs related work as directed.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.

Functions in a crew leader capacity for facilities maintenance and / or trades personnel engaged in installation, maintenance and carpentry repair projects and tasks.

Receives work orders, coordinates project activities, and delegates tasks to trades and facilities maintenance personnel, when applicable to assigned work orders;

determines equipment, materials, tools and supplies required per job site.

Prepares cost estimates; fills out work orders and purchase orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains inventory records concerning assigned trucks and equipment;

maintains time and attendance records.

Performs necessary calculations in estimating materials, supplies and manpower requirements, i.e., measuring distances and square footage, measuring angles and heights, figuring quantities and coverage.

Provides crew leader training and instruction to lesser skilled trades and facilities maintenance personnel in project tasks, and in use and safe operation of various hand-held manual, electrical and gas powered tools and equipment.

Performs skilled carpentry installation tasks including, but not limited to, interior wallboard, exterior siding, access ramps, porches, steps, flooring, sub-flooring, doors and door locks, windows, ceilings, baseboards, roofing and trim.

Performs maintenance, servicing, remodeling, and repair tasks on interior and exterior facilities and structures, to include refurbishing existing furniture items, i.

e., desks, tables, cabinetry.

Ensures proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized per work site; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe use and operation of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles.

Coordinates projects and tasks with school staff as applicable, i.e., informing teachers of what materials to remove from surfaces, scheduling when students must be moved to separate locations.

Oversees and participates in clean up and work site restoration activities, i.e., cleaning flooring, replacing furniture, wiping down surfaces.

Reviews drawings, blue prints, sketches and / or related specifications outlining project tasks and sequencing; may develop design specifications as directed.

Responds to and takes appropriate actions in the event of emergency or critical incidents, i.e., fires, flooding, hurricanes.

Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.

Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by five (5) years of progressively skilled and knowledgeable experience in all aspects of commercial and / or industrial carpentry work;

or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license class D , and successfully complete forklift and Hilti gun training.

Effective March 1, 2011, all new hires to this position must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS);

previous incumbents holding this position without a break in service are not required to have this screening.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization : Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and / or rebuild carpentry or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications.

Verbal Aptitude : Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, design, and / or advisory data and information.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability : Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds);

may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements : Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate textures.

Some tasks require oral communications ability. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

Environmental Factors : Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, strong odors and toxic / poisonous agents.
