POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Nurse Aide performs various resident care activities and related nonprofessional services essential to caring for personal needs and comfort of residents.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1Handles and serves residents in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort, adhering to instructions issued by the nursing supervisor and or charge nurse to establish shift routines;

2Performs duties in accordance with established methods and techniques and in conformance with recognized standards;

3Provides maximum resident care services within limits defined by delegated tasks;

4Assumes responsibility for varied resident care duties as assigned by charge nurse to include admitting, discharging, transferring and caring for the residents personal belongings and assisting the professional nurse in performing resident treatments;

5Bathes the resident in bed, tub or shower, combs hair, cleans and cuts fingernails and gives shampoos;

6Makes both occupied and unoccupied beds;

7Positions residents in correct body alignment in and out of bed and applies safety measures under the direction of the charge nurse;

8Assists the residents in and out of bed, in walking and transports residents throughout a facility via wheelchair, geri-chair, or stretcher; may accompany residents when transported outside the facility for appointments;

9Coordinates scheduling for residents requiring O.T., P.T., S.T., to assure that they are available for the therapist on a timely basis;

10Verifies that all residents have wrist bands, medication, picture, and door tags;

11Accompanies residents when transported outside facility for appointments as needed;

12Assists the charge nurse during the resident admission assessment;

13Participates in the formulation and follow through of the residents nursing care plan;

14Takes and records weights, blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and respiration;

15Gives various skin care treatments;

16Applies simple clean dressings, slings, stockings, and support bandages, under direction of the licensed nurse;

17Feeds residents, assists all residents with their meals and provides in between meal nourishment, as well as providing fresh ice and water to the residents bedside;

18Completes record of residents oral intake and output;

19Answers residents call light or bell, delivers messages, administers bedpans and urinals, cleans areas of spillage or accidents caused by the resident;

20Performs isolation care as needed for residents condition;

21Participates in the orientation of new nursing assistants;

22Provides direct care to the more acutely ill residents on the nursing unit;

23Reports any/all changes in residents condition, any family concerns and residents complaints to charge nurse and/or supervisor;

24Collects and bags soiled linen and delivers to dirty linen area; if assigned, washes and dries items in domestic washer/drier;

25Obtains clean linens and supplies from supply areas as directed, cleans utility rooms, kitchen areas and all other nursing areas, as assigned;

26Cleans and sterilizes resident equipment;

27Receives and escorts visitors, collects, charts, records and reports;

28Transfers residents belongings and equipment as directed, and assists with postmortem care;

29Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals needs and rights;

30Assists with treatments and vitals, as necessary;

31Performs other duties as requested.

SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

1A minimum of a high school education or high school equivalency diploma is preferred for this position.

2It is mandatory that the candidate is able to read, write and understand the English language.

3In addition, a Certified Nurse Aide is required to attend a minimum of 12 hours continuing education programs provided by the facility in order to maintain certification.

4Finally, a certified nurse aide must have successfully completed a state approved certified nursing assistant program.
