Job Details:
The Fiber Technician I (FBT I) is the entry level fiber-based position within the company and is
responsible for many facets of the fiber portion of the systems. The FBT I performs various fiber
measurements, fiber splicing and testing throughout all systems and works in concert with the Service
Technician I and II as well as the System Technician I (SVT I) to qualify and maintain fiber services. The
FBT I has shown competency as both SVT I and SVT II and can assist in those tasks as needed from day to
day.
The Fiber Technician I is the entry level fiber technician position within the company, and career
advancement to a technical management position or System Technician I is dependent upon completion
of proper certifications within the company and/or a thorough display of competence within all tasks
associated with FBT I.
Specific Job Duties:
Performs all duties of the SVT I and SVT II positions as needed including system maintenance,
construction, and various system QoS inspections and forward and return RF alignment.
Responsible for the testing and termination of fiber optic cabling within the company's infrastructure,
fiber demarcation hubs (FDH) and headend facilities.
Performs fusion splicing on single and multimode, loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cable in all
environments and conditions as needed.
Test and troubleshoot fiber optic issues within the system and work with Service Technician II and
System Technician I to diagnose and remedy issues.
Assist in the construction of the optical transmission network and FDH locations by performing fiber
equipment rack out, splicing and testing.
Utilizes an OTDR to perform system integrity checks to determine if issues exist and identifies and
resolves issues as located within the system.
Performs advanced fiber light measurements and light characterizations to help maintain the system
and resolve issues in an expeditious manner.
Familiar with advanced fusion machines, OTDRs and fiber optic test equipment to support the needs of
the company.
Provides reports to management on weekly, monthly, and quarterly system inspections.
Inspects and qualifies fiber optic cabling within the system regularly including at the headend, OTN, FDH
as well as new reels prior to installation.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and operate at heights up to 40 feet using extension ladders and/or bucket
truck.
Ability to work while standing 50-70% of the time. Work in all weather conditions and in various spaces
such as attics and crawl spaces.
Must be able to perform the tasks assigned in these areas that may be poorly ventilated and where
there may be dirt, dust, noise, insects, rodents, pets, and cleaning supplies.
Work in areas near power lines and active electrical services.
Familiarity with computer operating systems and a variety of customer devices including smartphones,
computers, routers, modems, set top boxes and wireless devices.
Ability to and willingness to learn to use various handheld devices including signal level meters,
spectrum analyzers, digital multi-meters as well as computer provided laptop and various software.
A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record that fall within company requirements.
Must be able to travel to and from assigned territories and company facilities, including during
inclement weather.

Completes all necessary paperwork associated with all jobs during his/her shift and submits to
supervisor in a timely, neat, and professional manner.
Regular, consistent, and punctual attendance.
Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
Able to work a rotating on call schedule.
