OPERATION RESTORATION is Hiring a Teacher Near Orleans, LA

About Operation Restoration:

Operation Restoration (OR) supports women and girls impacted by incarceration to recognize their full potential, restore their lives, and discover new possibilities. At OR, we focus on advocacy, education, economic mobility, and true economic equity for our staff, clients, and community. Our goal is to remove financial incentives for incarceration/detention to increase investments in social services, education, and healthcare for all people. Incarceration is defined as confinement in prison, jail, immigrant, juvenile or military detention, or a deportation facility. Directly impacted women and girls are those that are or have been incarcerated, arrested, are on probation and/or parole.

About the Position:

Operation Restoration is hiring a teacher for our Women FIRST Clinic. Under the direction of the Director of Education, the instructor implements a program of instruction for formerly incarcerated women who need skills remediation in reading, writing, and math, so they can achieve their educational goals. The instructor is responsible for augmenting Operation Restoration’s existing curriculum and creating individualized education plans for a cohort of ten students at a time.The instructor will also be responsible for coordinating childcare and transportation for students, as well as ordering classroom supplies (including snacks) and administrative duties associated with classroom activities (e.g. maintaining financial records for the Clinic).

This is a great position for someone who enjoys teaching adults, working with, supporting and making an impact in diverse and underserved populations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a cohort of formerly incarcerated women and girls baseic reading, writing, science, social studies and math skills
  • Use instructional methods geared toward the adult learner in a classroom setting
  • Deliver lessons and curriculum based on the learning needs of culturally diverse and multi-skill level students to prepare those students to pass high school equivalency tests (HISET) and/or enhance basic education skills
  • Deliver whole group, small group and individualized instruction to students, using a variety of instructional methods, materials, and techniques. Give feedback on student work in a timely manner
  • Understand and address the needs of formerly incarcerated women in the classroom (e.g. trauma-informed pedagogy)
  • Collaborate with Director of Education to create and develop curriculum lesson plans, teaching materials, Individual Learning Plans, Individual Academic Plans (504 accommodation) and Individual Education Plans to aid the learner
  • Conduct educational intakes for incoming students
  • Receive student feedback on course delivery and teaching methods
  • Implement procedures and program retention activities to assure attendance and that they get the wraparound services needed to be completers.
  • Arrange for students’ transportation to class and coordinate childcare for students during class time by the Education Department Coordinator
  • Collaborate with Operation Restoration’s Director of Social Services regarding students’ needs
  • Follow all policies set forth by Operation Restoration to measure and document student educational gains, attendance, and attainment of goals. Keep daily attendance records and progress reports
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date records, including financial records related to the Clinic (e.g. receipts for student transportation, payment invoices for tutors and childcare workers)
  • Through collaboration with the Education Department Coordinator, maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date records, including financial records related to the Clinic (e.g.d, receipts for student transportation, payment invoices for tutors and childcare workers)
  • Participate in local and state professional development activities that are developed and recommended by Operation Restoration
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service workshops
  • Use available technology in classroom instruction
  • Adhere to regulations set forth regarding confidentiality of student records
  • Monitor participants' needs in order to remediate educational deficiencies
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Collects and input data and reports in Apricot in a timely manner
  • Work with education volunteers
  • Maintain a clean and professional classroom environment

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • 1-3 years teaching experience, with experience in Adult Education, especially with low-level literacy students
  • Familiarity with HiSET and TABE requirements and processing
  • Excellent computer skills. Regular use of Microsoft Office and Google products
  • Ability to manage timelines, prioritize multiple products and meet demanding deadlines

  • Be comfortable taking appropriate initiative
  • Bachelor’s degree; Graduate degree preferred
  • Preferred administrative and curriculum development experience and grant-writing skills

  • Ability to work well with diverse individuals and groups, balance needs and employ objectivity
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility to meet student needs and organizational changes

Compensation and Benefits:

We offer a competitive salary range of $37,400-$56,200, commensurate with experience. Employee benefits include 75% employer-paid medical, 50% employer paid dental and vision, a generous PTO policy, STD, Simple IRA with immediate employer match and 12 paid holidays
