Job Description/General Function
The Program Lead is responsible for the enjoyment, welfare, safety, and character development of youth involved in the Summer Camp and Break Camp Programs. Program Lead will teach engaging classes in the following areas: art, team building, nutrition, and academics, among others, according to their skill set. The instructor may transport children to and from the YMCA using the Y van and/or Y bus. Instructors will aid in supervising free recreation time, lunch, and snack time, and maintain YMCA rules and standards. Instructors will communicate regularly with the coordinator and Director about progress of class, supplies needed and other related information.
Locations
Port Angeles- YMCA Building,
Jefferson County- Mt. View campus
Both Port Angeles and Jefferson County will have various classes at offsite locations with the possibility of field trips
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- 18 years of age or older.
- Current state approved CPR & First Aid certification.
- Pass a comprehensive background check
- Experience working with children ages 5 to 13
- Knowledge of child development
- Ability to plan and implement age-appropriate classes
- Ability to relate well to children and adults in all circumstances
- Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
Driver Requirements
- 18 years of age or older.
- Valid drivers license
- Driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards
- Current auto insurance
Areas of Responsibility
- Be responsible for the supervision and management of children registered in classes
- Carry out positive guidance and discipline when needed
- Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youths
- Completes required child abuse prevention training
- Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youths
- Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations
- Maintain a professional attitude and loyalty to the Summer Day Camp program and YMCA
- Treat children with respect and dignity
- Attend field trips planned during sessions, including swimming and assist where required/needed
- Help with general housekeeping tasks
- Maintain open communication with children, staff, and parents
- Work with other staff to provide a relevant, fun, and safe program
- Wear appropriate YMCA attire as directed by policy
- Plan and implement assigned classes
- Recruit and work closely with volunteer instructors
- Maintain timely communication with Coordinator to ensure all necessities for class implementation are available
- Submits hours worked accurately on electronic timecard, within timelines for supervisor approval
- Other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Environment
Port Angeles- YMCA rooms, gym, and neighborhood park
Jefferson County-Blue Heron School & Chimacum Elementary classrooms, gym and outdoor playground All locations have off site field trips and specific classes may be arranged to occur offsite
Physical Abilities
- Bending at the waist to pick up supplies, play games and perform daily cleaning tasks
- Ability to lift a small to average size child
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computers and office equipment
