Position Summary

This position is a part time volunteer building guide position that reports to the Director of Education. This position is responsible for familiarizing Old Salem’s guests with the history, functions, and customs of our entire district. The volunteer should be an excellent storyteller with a knack for customer service.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• Greet and welcome guests to the various venues within Old Salem.
• Respond to questions and provide pertinent information to visitors.
• Ensure all site visitors feel welcome and experience a unique journey.
• Maintain a professional and positive demeanor with visitors and other members of staff.
• Assist with maintaining the historic accuracy of the site.
• Maintain cleanliness and preservation of the assigned historic location.
• Ensure representation of the full diversity of Old Salem Museums & Garden’s mission.
• After the first 140 hours of service, the volunteer may be loaned historical clothing for which they will maintain cleanliness and accuracy.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

WHAT YOU NEED:

• Must be age 16 or older.
• Deeply collaborative and committed to equity and diversity.
• Prior experience as a tour guide is advantageous.
• Capacity to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Outstanding organizational, time management, and improvisational skills.
• Must have prior experience with reading, researching, and presenting.
• Capacity to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Excellent conversational skills and a friendly, approachable disposition.
• Ability to work on occasional Saturdays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position involves some physical work, which requires the ability to lift or carry up to 20 pounds. Ability to stand for long periods of time and use stairs, tolerable of day-to-day moderate noise in an open setting. Work is year-round in all weather conditions.
