Oklahoma State University is Hiring a Science Specialist Near Stillwater, OK

Job Summary:
This position is 30 hours a week Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This position will only work August 1 through May 31. The Science portion of this position will provide on-going tutoring in all areas of science including biological life sciences, chemistry, and nutritional sciences. This position will assess student skill levels, design individual programs of study, assist students through the developmental and college level math classes, evaluate the progress and facilitate the student’s ongoing progress through their requirements. This position will also build a strong relationship with each course professor and with the anatomy lab technician to utilize the open lab. Overall goal of the Specialist is to assist and intervene with support services for academic and retention success. Additionally, the Specialist will empower disadvantaged students (low-income, 1st generation, and disabled) with academic and personal tools and skills that will help them persist in college until attaining a degree.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide Project SOAR students with subject matter tutoring and assistance with challenging concepts.
    a. All areas of science.
    b. Maintain a working knowledge and expertise of science computer software systems that are utilized in science classes.
  • Design individualized programs to assist students in basic skill development.
  • Design, monitor, and coordinate the tutoring procedures and develop a tracking system.
  • Design and teach academic related workshops each semester.
  • Complete in a timely fashion required time & effort reports, timesheets, and other recordkeeping forms.
  • Coordinate with Math instructors to have up to date resources, such as books, syllabi, software, etc.
  • Network with college instructors to recruit new students and to develop a flow of communication to keep up with the latest requirements and techniques.
  • Network with college staff and faculty to do ongoing outreach on campus to make the program known.
  • Recruit new students through classroom visits and other paths.
  • Evaluate the students’ progress and provide intervention and feedback.
  • Providing feedback to instructors about where a student is struggling.
  • Providing feedback to the Director regarding issues or success stories.
  • Document on-going student contact logs via computerized database.
  • Serve on college and professional committees as requested by Director.
  • Assigned extensive multiple work assignments.
  • Completes all mandatory training and participated in a minimum of two professional development each year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Education:

  • Associate degree OR equivalent work experience with completed courses in Human Anatomy, Chemistry, and Basic Human Nutrition with a grade of A or B.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or equivalent experience.

Work Experience:

  • 1-2 years of science teaching/tutoring experience. (Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Nutritional Sciences)
  • At least 1 year experience in higher education at a community college level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Professional and positive behavior and appearance.
  • Must be dependable, responsible, and prompt.
  • High degree of initiative to work independently and also collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to build working relationships with students to better serve their academic needs.
  • Knowledge of tutoring techniques and strategies.
  • Working knowledge of science courses offered at OSU-OKC (Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Nutritional Sciences).
  • Ability to problem solve and coordinate tutoring sessions.
  • Ability to enter computer contact reports on each student session.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, fax machines, scanners, internet, Newsletter design software, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to gather data, analyze it, and generate grade and attendance reports for retention demonstration.
  • Understanding of study skill strategies, including notetaking, time management, test-taking tips, textbook reading instruction, memory techniques, etc.
  • Ability to work remotely via Zoom, Skype, and through other online platforms.
  • Knowledge of retention and graduation best practices.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • High degree of integrity; ability to work in a sensitive, highly confidential and professional environment.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress, imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads, and public/student contact.
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly, and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to a multicultural environment to work and communicate effectively with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • Ability to work closely and efficiently with students of varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Understanding of cultural diversity and the disadvantaged populations.
  • Ability to handle confidential information discreetly.
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU-OKC and OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.


Certifications &/or Licenses

Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science
  • Basic understanding of Banner, Canvas, and Degree works.
  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring in a college educational environment.
  • Formal training in curriculum development, teaching techniques, tutoring methods, and documentation practices.
  • TRIO background experience.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.
  • Work will be performed in an office environment with a significant amount of public contact, in person, by telephone, via email, and various communication platforms.
  • Occasional outside conditions when on cultural events and transfer events.

Physical Requirements:

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking and listening.
  • Duties require extensive use of computers, telephone and other office equipment.
  • Requires possible lifting of up to 25 lbs. (If an object weights more than 45 lbs., OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift).
