Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. is Hiring an Apple Sizer & Grader Operator Near Moses Lake, WA

Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. (OSF) is seeking an Apple Sizer & Grader Operator, a position that is vital to optimizing production efficiency, quality, and ensure our product is graded to meet the specifications of each of our intended production streams. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the equipment throughput to meet consistent volume targets while effectively achieving quality and sizing standards. The Apple Sizer & Grader Operator will actively participate in workplace safety and assist all aspects of the operation to maximize efficiency.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain and revise sizer programs to meet production goals and efficiencies ~ this includes the sizing, color, and internal and external defect programming for each variety.
  • Set up, program, and operation of the Optical and Weight Sizing Equipment.
  • Calibrate and maintain sizing equipment.
  • Set up fruit drops on the sizer.
  • Adjust sizer weight and colors per grade requirement.
  • Consistently strive to improve the sorting capabilities and efficiency of the grading line.
  • Troubleshoot, identify, and correct equipment problems and inefficiencies.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance team general and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Complete daily operations and paperwork accurately.
  • Communicate routinely with Production Supervisor, Maintenance, and IT providing status updates on efficiency, downtime, or any pending issues/concerns.
  • Support maintaining the quality of the graded products.
  • Monitor cleaning activities on processing equipment, conduct pre run inspection and document. Report deficiencies or concerns to direct supervisor.
  • Follow all food safety and food quality standards, regulations, and laws.
  • Follow occupational safety, security, lock out rules, and adhere to precautions prescribed by equipment vendor and internal safety program.
  • Demonstrate a daily commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and maintain reports, charts, graphs, and effective correspondence.
  • This role supports special projects as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

DESIRED KEY COMPETENCIES:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with sizer operations (optical and other)
  • Mechanical and Industrial Maintenance experience and aptitude
  • Demonstrate the highest ethical standards and trustworthiness.
  • The ability to work collaboratively, follow instructions and work independently.
  • Food Safety Standard knowledge (BRCGS Global Food Safety Standard) preferred.
  • GMP and HACCP knowledge preferred.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to utilize equipment and company specific programs.
  • High attention to detail
  • Inventory management and accuracy is a must.
  • Able to communicate with all departments and levels of the organization with clarity and precision.
  • Ability to build and maintain charts interpreting the product grading results.
  • Able to apply advanced mathematical concepts.
  • Able to read and understand technical instructions and blueprints.
  • Ability to multitask and oversee multiple pieces of equipment at one time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
  • 2 years’ experience in food processing
  • 2 years' experience working with sizing equipment.
  • Experience with optical and weight sorter systems is preferred.
  • Experience in whole apple grading and quality control
  • Experience working in a fruit packing facility a

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. safely
  • Standing for long periods of time, frequent twisting and bending, use of both hands, manual & finger dexterity for rolling/manipulating
  • Climbing ladders
  • Exposure to loud noises
  • The use of safety equipment when operating machinery that may include protective clothing, safety glasses, hearing protectors, and safety shoes.
  • Repetitive motions
  • Must be able to work a varied schedule during seasonal times (days/mid/evenings)
  • Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces.
