Ohio Hispanic Coalition is Hiring a Summer Camp Counselor Near Columbus, OH

The Ohio Hispanic Coalition is in search of dedicated individuals to work as Summer Camp Counselors for the Niños en Acción (Children in Action) Summer Enrichment Camp - Summer STEAM Academy. Staff will start on Monday, June 3rd, 2024 and ending on Friday, August 2nd, 2024. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 7:00AM to 4:00PM.

About the Program

The Niños en Acción Summer Enrichment Camp& Summer STEAM Academy provides culturally and linguistically-appropriate technology and social/emotional development programming for historically-marginalized, low-income, Latino/Hispanic youth ages 6-13 in the Columbus area. The program will take place during the summer from June 10th, 2024 through August 3rd, 2024, Monday through Friday 8AM-3PM, excluding federal holidays.

The program will address barriers in digital literacy and social/emotional development experienced by low-income, Latino/Hispanic youth residents through STEAM activities in a safe and healthy environment for participants to foster their academic performance, intellectual growth, diversity, self-identity/expression, healthy lifestyle choices, conflict resolution, anger management, career pathways, transferable skills, environmental awareness, financial literacy, and community and civic engagement in preparation for the next school year and future career.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for timely arrival and adherence to work schedule.
  • Assist in providing services to families in public benefits applications, registrations, and general assistance.
  • Physically active and engaging with the participants.
  • Facilitate daily services for students such as classroom preparation, meal service, and overall cleanliness.
  • Execute all educational activities, recreational activities, and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively and timely any problems, concerns, or comments surrounding students, activities, or staff members to supervisors.
  • Provide physical, cultural, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) -related activities from the curriculum available.
  • Engage participants in group work and activities, such as reading, grammar, math problem-solving, technology skills, arts and crafts, projects, and physical activity.
  • Maintain a healthy, safe, and clean learning environment in the classroom.
  • Develop lesson plans and maintain classroom management.
  • Ability to both take direction and work independently.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry boxes up to 30 pounds.
  • Flexible schedule availability to assist in community events and provide outreach efforts.
  • Travel with students while managing student safety and behavior on the bus and at field trip sites.
  • Understands and is willing to travel around Central Ohio areas and/or be assigned to other sites when needed.
  • Maintain constant and effective communication with the parents in the program, when needed.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service to the students, parents, instructors, staff, and visitors at all times.
  • Commitment to be present and assist with the end-of-program celebration.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in English (preferred)
  • Fluent in Spanish (preferred)
  • Microsoft Word, and Excel technological abilities (preferred)
  • HS Diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle. (required)
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. (required)
  • Ability to pass a BCI Background Check (required)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age. (required)
  • Available to work the entire camp period (June 3-August 2). Applicants that need to be absent for three or more days off during the period will not be considered. Any time off requested during the summer camp dates must disclosed and be pre-approved prior to hiring.

Experience : One or more years of related child care or summer day camp experience (preferred)

  • Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Must demonstrate sound judgment and initiative, and must display a positive and professional attitude.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time, to talk and hear, to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, to climb or balance, to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, occasional bending, reaching or squatting. The individual is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. Also required is frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the telephone. More than 80% of time is spent outdoors. The noise level is normal to loud within an active program environment.

Job Type: Temporary. Position does not include benefits (paid medical leave, paid time off, health insurance, 401k retirement, etc.).

Salary: starting at $16.00/hour
