Position Summary:

The NYU Proteomics Laboratory is a resource laboratory fiscally maintained by fee-for-service and collaborative grants and operated by NYU Langone Health. The Proteomics staff members develop and provide their knowledge and expertise to the research community at NYU Langone Health in a broad variety of proteomics research and applications. They work closely with investigators to define optimal experimental design, develop and maintain standards for all service procedures and troubleshooting, and provide guidance in data management and analysis.

The Research Scientist will report to the Director of Proteomics and will work independently within the scientific framework of the Laboratory to serve its goals and that of the principal investigators collaborating with the laboratory.

The successful candidate will coordinate and manage the operation of all the proteomics instruments available in the Proteomics Laboratory, train staff members and will be responsible for performing and establishing a variety of complex laboratory tasks and methods development to provide high quality proteomics support for the research community. The Research Scientist will be responsible for meeting with users and advising them on experimental design, sample preparation prior to mass spectrometry and providing cost estimates. A critical role will be the overseeing and implementation of QC parameters and ensure that all staff members are able to implement those and follow standard operating procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Scientific and Operational

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organization’s core values and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
  • Coordinates the activity and experimental design between various labs, scientific staff, and collaborators.
  • Identifies and resolves technical problems.
  • Meets with potential users of the laboratory to discuss feasibility of projects, advises on sample strategies, proposes experimental strategy and calculates the budget.
  • Initiates, interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates research assignments critical to the core’s mission.
  • Formulates and conducts research on problems of considerable scope and complexity.
  • Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope.
  • Makes decisions and recommendations that have a major impact on the scientific research activities of the laboratory.
  • Develop new ideas that promote current research. Exercises a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding extensive scientific research programs and activities of outstanding novelty and/or importance.
  • Conduct method and protocol development for collection and quality of research data to enable mass spectrometric analysis of proteins
  • Ensures timely and accurate completion of research projects and data delivery.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all laboratory instruments, determine and establish laboratory policies, procedures and practices, including quality control and compliance.
  • Recommends equipment purchases and implements redesign of lab space to incorporate new equipment.
  • Provide students and technicians with technical guidance and direction in the operation of various sample preparation techniques, instruments, and equipment as well as general laboratory practices and safety protocols.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of the advances in mass spectrometry and proteomics through attendance of scientific conferences.
  • Make significant contributions to scientific papers. Is expected to be a resource/ author/ coauthor for reports, manuscripts and presentations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties; asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy.
  • Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.

Minimum Qualifications

Master of Science Degree in Analytical Sciences or a related field with 2-4 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry with experience in an analytical mass spectrometric laboratory.
  • Has a thorough and demonstrable knowledge of biological mass spectrometry and nanoflow HPLC systems.
  • Has a thorough and working knowledge of analytical chemistry, with established record of publications.
  • Excellent organization and multi-tasking skills. Outstanding communication and customer-based skills.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $42,900.00 - $79,268.80 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
