Description
Position Summary:
Sets up and operates conventional or special-purpose MIG or TIG welders to weld metallic parts or assemblies, applying knowledge of welding theory and procedures, shop mathematics, maintainability of materials, and layout techniques.
Essential Job Functions:
· Studies blueprints, instructions, or sample parts to review dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
· Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on materials or workpieces as guides for subsequent welding.
· Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, attachments, accessories, and materials on welding machines or worktables as required.
· Calculates and sets controls to regulate machine factors, such as wire feed speed, amperage, polarity, type of gas, and type of weld rod.
· Operates and observes welder to detect malfunctions or non-conforming conditions and adjusts machine controls as required.
· Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify the accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
· Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, and hand tools.
· Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
· Inspects and measures parts to maintain quality records.
· Maintains accurate parts counts; attaches labels or tags to finished part containers identifying customer, part number, quantity, and shop order information.
· Utilizes the data collection system to accurately record production activities including time spent, quantity produced and any rejected parts.
· Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate job activities.
· Follows all safety procedures and wears safety equipment or apparel as required.
· Performs all job functions to meet acceptable quality and performance standards.
· Ensures daily that the work area is clean and orderly including machine, tooling and workstation.
Employees may be required to follow other job-related instructions and duties as requested, subject to all applicable state and federal laws.
Requirements
Training and Experience: Minimum of 4 years of welding education or work experience. Blueprint reading and shop mathematics are required.
Physical Demands: The employee is required to:
· Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or
· Exert up to 25 pounds of force frequently.
Visual Acuity: Accommodation as required for reading documents, prints, computer screens, machine dials; and for evaluating parts or using precision measuring instruments.
Hearing Ability: Ability to communicate with others and accommodation as required to monitor radio, telephone, and paging systems and as needed to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes to take appropriate action.
Working Conditions: Typical metal manufacturing environment with powder coat paint facility exposure.
