POSITION TITLE: High School Counselor and Accommodations Coordinator
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt, Full Time
REPORTS TO: High School Principal
A school counselor and accommodations coordinator at Notre Dame de Sion High School provides high quality academic guidance, leads innovative social-emotional learning programs, and is instrumental in our school goal to develop students who are well-rounded, faith-filled citizens and servant leaders. This is accomplished in an atmosphere of love, respect, hopefulness, openness, and by building connections through relationships.

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
  • Knowledge and understanding of and commitment to the Sion mission.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related field.
  • Knowledge of best practices school counseling, accommodations & learning differences, academic guidance, culturally-responsive counseling, and psycho-educational evaluations.
  • Deep understanding of the specific needs of adolescent girl development, including social emotional needs.
  • Demonstrated facilitative skills for staff meetings and student/parent presentations.
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Flexibility in working with a variety of faculty across the divisions on faculty committees.
  • Ability to set goals and accept professional feedback.
  • Must demonstrate competency with school related technology.
  • Maintain professional credentials as required by Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) or other accrediting agencies.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Provide individual counseling and academic advisement.
  • Develop four-year plans of study and yearly course selections with advisees.
  • Participate in the coordination and completion of the scheduling process.
  • Ensure that students are meeting graduation requirements and college/career goals.
  • Develop Individual Accommodation Plans based on psych-educational and medical evaluations that meet the criteria outlined in the NDS Academic Brochure.
  • Conduct meetings with parents, teachers, students, therapists, or educational consultants to coordinate services and assist students in achieving their goals.
  • Inform and educate teachers of individual diagnoses and needs.
  • Coordinate with teachers, students, and proctors to provide extended time on tests as well as other accommodations.
  • Adhere to College Board and ACT procedures and application deadlines to request and later coordinate accommodations on tests, such as ACT, SAT, PSAT & AP.
  • Stay informed of district, state, and federal policies for students with disabilities.
  • Organize Student Services Team bimonthly meetings.
  • Annually inform the parent community of services available to students with learning differences.
  • Each semester, notify individual teachers of students on Individual Accommodation Plans.
  • Work with parents and teachers of those students experiencing academic difficulties. Utilize meetings, behavioral checklists, and outside referrals to assist in identifying and responding to individual needs.
  • Advocate for students and serve as a liaison between teachers, parents, and students.
  • Aid students/parents in PSAT/PRE-ACT preparation and interpretation.
  • Lead parent informational nights and support college programming.
  • Support the admission office through open house, HPST proctoring, admissions interviews, and new student nights.
  • Participate in general duties such as study hall supervision and supervision at after-school events (i.e., dances, athletic events, etc.).
  • Maintain current attendance and student records.
  • Attend all required professional development, faculty and staff meetings, parent meetings, and any special meetings requested by the administration.
  • Continue personal and professional development conferences and other development opportunities to ensure that teaching practices remain current.
  • Assist with other projects, programs, and planning as assigned by the High School Principal.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Works in a classroom environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
  • Occasionally bend, stoop, and squat
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled environment
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
