Northwestern University Settlement is Hiring an Outdoor Educator Near Delavan, WI

Position: Educator
Reports to: Outdoor Education Coordinator
Location: Delavan, WI
Organization Overview: The students who visit House in the Wood Outdoor Education Center refine their essential life and social skills in a safe outdoor environment. With the instruction of fully trained staff members, students learn about the natural world and explore various environments, including forest, lake, and marsh habitats. As a residential Outdoor Education center, we are able to provide a complete outdoor experience for inner-city students.
Job Summary: Educators teach multiple nature-related lessons (indoors and outdoors) to groups of 10 to 15 third through eighth-grade students. Lessons use our marsh, lake, forest, lawn, and Outdoor Education Center. They also implement our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) practice while supervising students. This position provides on-site housing.
Key Responsibilities
  • Teach outdoor environmental lessons to trail groups of 10 to 15 students between third and eighth grades.
  • Follow lesson plans as described in training.
  • Complete onsite training
  • Teach up to eight hours of outdoor lessons for three days.
  • Supervise trail group at meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Supper
  • Implement our social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons during times with students
  • Help with other areas as needed and complete paperwork as assigned
  • Cleanup and maintain lesson equipment and facility after group departs
Ideal Skills/Traits
  • Knowledge of subject matter at third to eighth-grade level
  • Able to work independently when teaching lessons
  • Able to work closely with other staff members
  • Ability to effectively manage students through appropriate behavior-management techniques, as determined in staff training.
  • Possess adaptability, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
  • Ability to communicate and work with children, especially 7-12 year-olds, and to provide necessary instruction to students.
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Ability to relate positively to one's peers
Experience/Education
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and able to work legally in the United States.
  • At least junior level in college or equivalent in experience. Prefer Bachelor’s degree in a subject related to teaching and/or life science.
  • Experience with teaching children
  • Experience with teaching outdoor lessons or desire to learn
Compensation
$150.00 per day. Housing is provided, and when programs are in session, food is included.
