Position Title: Outdoor School Volunteer Facilitator Assistant
Department: Instructional Services / Northwest Outdoor Science School
Location: Washington County Service Center; Outdoor School (Various Locations in NW Oregon)
Reports To: Outdoor School Site Supervisor
Spring 2023: 1/23/23-6/2/23
Salary: $19.96-23.86/hr

Part Time: 20 hours per week

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Assist the Volunteers Facilitator in the recruitment, training, selection, and scheduling of high school and college students as volunteers in the Outdoor School (ODS) program.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.   1. Bachelors Degree preferred.
  2. Experience in outdoor education or related field, preferred.

  3. Experience working with high school students in an educational or mentoring capacity.

  4. Valid Oregon driver’s license and vehicle.

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

  5. Active interest in youth and environment.

  6. Ability to work with youths as well as adults.

  7. Ability to communicate successfully in both oral and written form.

  8. Ability to establish and maintain strong professional relationships with high school and college students, high school guidance counselors, high school administrators & teachers, college placement officials, and other community members.

  9. Strong organizational & typing skills.

  10. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Google Suite.

  • Recruit high school and college students to serve as ODS Student Leaders.

  • Facilitate “in-town” trainings for high school & college students who wish to volunteer as new ODS Student Leaders.

  • Assist with scheduling high school and college students as ODS Student Leaders.

  • Occasionally send off and greet Student Leader buses.

  • Help to maintain accurate and accessible records of all volunteers.

  • Assist in communicating regularly with Student Leaders by phone and email.

  • Promote volunteer opportunities at various venues including, but not limited to; high schools, colleges, fairs, conferences, meetings, etc.

  • Attends ESD staff meetings and other meetings.

  • Assist ODS office and site staff as needed to support ODS operations.

  • Travel to ODS sites during the session to support Student Leaders and site staff, as needed, to support and enrich Student Leader program.

  • Assist the ODS Supervisor and ODS Administrative Assistant as assigned.

  • Help create recruiting materials, such as posters, banners and possibly videos.


Employee will be compensated 8 hours for every day worked. Weekly schedule varies between 5 and 6 day work weeks. Most work weeks are 5 days. Due to the seasonal camp-based nature of this position, it is exempt for state overtime wage regulations.

On August 19, 2021 Governor Brown ordered all public and private school teachers, educators, support staff, substitutes and volunteers to be vaccinated by October 18, 2021 or six weeks after FDA approval, whichever is later. Since the governor’s announcement, a COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech) has received regular Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval meaning October 18, 2021 is confirmed as the mandatory deadline for vaccination. "Fully vaccinated" is defined as 14 days after receiving all required doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine (currently two shots of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one shot of Johnson & Johnson vaccine). 

Starting October 18, 2021, testing will no longer be an option as the alternative to vaccination. All Northwest Regional ESD staff, substitutes, contractors, interns and volunteers will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 per the August 19, 2021 order from Gov. Kate Brown. All staff members will need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Exemptions may be made only for eligible medical or religious reasons. There will not be an option to opt out for other reasons or choose testing in lieu of vaccination, under the state mandate. In order to support students and families, the essential functions of this position may require physical presence in the workplace. All public health protocols will be followed.
