What you will need:

  • Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory program and current MT (ASCP) registration or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 3 years Medical Technologist experience in a hospital clinical laboratory with lead or supervisor responsibilities.
  • Experience in analytical instrument evaluation, quality control, and technical troubleshooting required.
  • In depth knowledge of the principles and procedures of routine and complex laboratory tests and the equipment used.
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory information systems and computer software applications.

I. GENERAL SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Lab Director, is responsible for the daily technical operation of assigned section within the technical laboratory. Maintains high quality of laboratory services through quality control, quality assurance, training, monitoring and troubleshooting section operations. Serves as a liaison with Clinical Chemists and Clinical Pathologists on technical issues. Oversees day-to-day operations assuring effective and efficient team operations and continually seeks new ways to enhance team performance. Plans and manages section staffing requirements and monitors resources and productivity, Works as a Medical Technologist within the work group, providing laboratory services as needed. Maintains effective operation of the assigned Laboratory areas and related services. Ensures procedural documentation is completed to meet all regulatory requirements for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA), Joint Commission of Accredited Hospital Organizations (JCAHO) and College of American Pathologist (CAP) accreditation and any other relevant regulatory and accreditation bodies. Monitors turn-around-times and test utilization.

II. REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS:

Ensures timely, proper documentation for occurrence reports and reports it to the Lab Director and/or Medical Director.
In consultation with the Director, develops departmental goals and initiatives required to accomplish agreed upon goal. Participates in strategic planning for the Laboratory area overseen. Recommends resources required to meet department goals. Working with the Director, assists in the development of annual budgets and reviews departmental revenue and usage reports for accuracy. Evaluates effective use of resources through productivity and OT reports
Serves as the key contact for staff and the IT Department. Provides assistance to the LIS Department as needed to keep system and related database updates for assigned areas to ensure timely and appropriate test coding, reimbursement, pricing and lab user information.

Monitors and oversees daily operation of a laboratory section; reviews documentation/reports, abnormal results or analytical processes with the Clinical Pathologist or Clinical Chemist and director; troubleshoots technical problems, analyzer operations, and specimen processing/handling problems. Facilitates inventory/supply and resolves problems outside of routine inventory. Acts as the primary resource person for technical information concerning laboratory test procedures, instrument operations, and specimen handling.
Supervises and coordinates Quality Control (QC) programs within the section. Sets up and monitors QC monthly data, periodic maintenance, and calibration of laboratory analyzers. Sets up, monitors, prints, and reviews QC reports and presents to the Clinical Chemist for review taking corrective action as indicated and reports to Director. Monitors and reviews all Quality Assurance (QA) reports; and in conjunction with the Director formulates and implements policy/process improvements based on the QA assessments and implements necessary corrective action. Coordinates and facilitates chemical hygiene compliance as suggested by the laboratory QA Manager. Investigates and resolves safety and/or chemical hygiene related problems. Ensures chemical inventory list for the assigned Laboratory areas is kept up-to-date.
In conjunction with the Clinical Chemist, participates in the implementation of new laboratory analyzers, procedures and methodologies, in accordance with College of American Pathology (CAP) and International Standardized Laboratory (NCCLS) guidelines. Writes and updates technical procedures and technical training checklists. Makes recommendations to the Director for improvements to NCH laboratory equipment and processes. Oversees new instrumentation validation and provides technical support where needed
Collaborates with Director on staff and team development. Coordinates design, implementation and review of staff competency assessments. Assists Director with departmental meetings. Provide technical in-services in responsible clinical area. Develops and implements programs for training new staff, cross-training current staff, and student clinical rotations. Supports and facilitates the development of team members' knowledge and skills, during orientation and on an ongoing basis; provides timely feedback, guidance, and training to help each individual reach their goals; offers help without removing responsibility for action.Facilitates the development of team performance expectations and recognition of positive accomplishments and performance. Gathers and gives feedback that guides and motivates team member performance. Prepares and delivers team member performance evaluations. In conjunction with the Director, interviews and selects new hires. Develops staff schedules to ensure adequate staffing of section for emergency and unplanned staff absences.
In conjunction with the Director, participates in quality improvement assessment and initiates process improvements collaboratively with other teams. Responsible for the implementation of quality initiatives.. Coordinates and facilitates departmental meetings, including agenda preparation. Effectively communicates changes in policies, procedures, and operations. Provides written minutes covering topics discussed including operations and performance improvement activities. Conducts periodic meetings with staff to discuss operations and process improvements. Communicates all policies to employees and provides overall direction necessary to ensure efficient and effective laboratory service.
Performs all the duties of a Medical Technologist, as described in the Medical Technologist job description, as needed. Maintains competency on all benches in the departments of responsibility.

Prepares for scheduled CAP and Joint Commission of Accredited Hospital Organizations (JCAHO) accreditation inspections. Reviews CAP checklists and updates procedures, policies, and documentation to meet all requirements; coordinates team process in preparing for inspections; participates in CAP inspection teams as applicable. Coordinates the performance of CAP surveys; monitors the schedule for survey specimens; completes and distributes worksheets/specimens to technologists and checks for completeness and clerical errors; completes report forms and submits results. Reviews survey summary reports with Manager and follows up with corrective actions as required.
Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

III. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with physicians, hospital staff and to motivate individuals on the team.

The organizational skills necessary to coordinate multiple projects and complete work efficiently with little or no supervision.

The communication skills necessary to express ideas effectively in individual and group situations.

The analytical skills necessary to appropriately assess and plan for the needs of the team to successfully achieve performance and quality goals.

The ability to adhere to precise procedures and standards with a high degree of accuracy in observing, recording and transmitting data.

V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Moderate physical effort. Requires continual standing or walking. May require frequent lifting or moving of average weight material, or occasional lifting or moving of heavy weight material.

The flow of work and character of duties involves concentrated mental and visual attention much or all of the time, along with manual coordination.

VI. WORKING CONDITIONS:

There is continual risk of exposure to infectious disease and hazardous chemicals and solutions
