Position is located: Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital

Work Type: PRN

Hours Per Week: No Hours Assigned

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Summary:

Under the leadership of the Vascular Access Supervisor, The Vascular Access RN is responsible for operations of the vascular access needs of the inpatients and outpatients at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital and may be consulted by Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital. Responsibilities include anticipating, planning, coordinating, and implementing vascular access services for our patients. This position requires critical thinking skills, the ability to work well independently, and a strong team player.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultation to the health care team and patient for the most appropriate vascular access device recommendations based on patient assessment and treatment plan. Works to ensure early assessment for vascular access device selection and implementation.
  • Assesses patients with difficult vascular access and assists to establish access when needed. Provides competent use of ultrasound guidance for obtaining vascular access. Places vascular access devices including ultrasound guided peripheral IV catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), and midline IV catheters. Recommends alternate means of vascular access as appropriate. Utilizes ultrasound guidance for obtaining blood sample collection, including blood cultures.
  • Assesses and helps manage peripherally and centrally inserted vascular access devices. Serves as a resource to staff for ongoing patient’s vascular access device monitoring, maintenance, and management, and troubleshoots potential related complications. Provides expertise and assistance in maintaining vascular access patency, site care, and dressing care.
  • Accesses and de-accesses implanted vascular access ports.
  • Is responsible for directing and coordinating vascular access nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing standards. Knowledge of relevant Standards of Practice, professional guidelines, HIPAA guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provides vascular access related education to patients and the healthcare team.
  • Collaborates with the clinical nurse educators for vascular access education and training of staff. Assesses skill levels of the staff and develops strategic education plans to ensure clinical competency.
  • Mentors clinical staff and students.
  • Develops and implements quality improvement initiatives. Plans and implement procedures and systems to maximize patient safety and operational efficiency. Formulates department policies/procedures and updates as required. Maintains current knowledge of organization’s policies and procedures.

Other Information:

  • Willing to acquire vascular access certification by the Association for vascular Access (VA-BC) within 2 years of hire.
  • Vascular access expertise preferred.
  • Midline and PICC insertion competency preferred.
