Definition: Under the direction of the Laboratory Technologist, the Laboratory Assistant obtains specimens and processes specimens according to established procedures.
Reports to:
Direct/Administrative: Clinic Administrator or designee
Technical /Clinical: Physician Lab Director / Medical Technologist / Director of Nursing ServicesQualifications:1. Two years as a phlebotomist or medical assistant in the laboratory.
2. Demonstrates increasing skill in the performance of, without constant supervision, specimen receiving, centrifuging, labeling, ogging, sorting and racking. Enters this information into database as appropriate.
3. High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED), and completion of a State approved program for Medical Assistants.
4. Proof of a minimum of ten (10) clock hours of training in venipuncture and skin puncture for the purpose of withdrawing blood (Calif.
5. Business & Professional Code 2069, 2070; and Calif. Code of Regulations 1366, 1366.1) OR Certification as a phlebotomist, issued by the State of California, Department of Health Services, Laboratory Field Services Branch.
6. Must be able to communicate tactfully and empathetically, with cultural sensitivity; with staff and patients.
7. Fluently bilingual Spanish and English required, oral and written communication skills demonstrated in both languages.
8. Display qualities of dependability and reliability, be willing to accept a variety of tasks, and able to comprehend quickly and follow instructions accurately.
9. Previous laboratory experience is desired.
10. Must maintain a professional demeanor at all times. Must interact well with patients, attending Physicians, and Medical Technologists.
11. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.
12. Must be willing and able to work a varied and flexible schedule, variable.
13. Current CA Driver's License, valid vehicle insurance, and an available vehicle needed.
14. The MIS Patient Information System access level is 2.
