JOB DESCRIPTION
-The Diabetes Nurse Educator assists the Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist and Patient Care Managers in ensuring the provision of quality patient care for diabetic patients. Responsibilities include teaching, consultation, patient care, and research utilization focused on enhancing the knowledge and skills required to care for diabetic patients and their families, identifying issues for performance improvement, and assuring compliance with accreditation/licensing requirements. The Diabetes Nurse Educator consults with managers and staff regarding patient care and staff performance issues, participates in setting standards for patient care, and maintains knowledge and skills related to the care of diabetic patients.
-Collaborates with nursing, interdisciplinary teams and community resources to define problems, develop plans and provide appropriate referrals.
-Develops, implements and evaluates cost-effective educational programs for diabetic patients, their families and communities.
-Identifies specific needs for, and means to, enhance professional development and maintain clinical competency.
-Incorporates clinical research in clinical, educational and consultative roles to provide a scientific basis for professional nursing practice.
-Knowledge of glucose monitoring systems, insulin administration technology, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment of diabetes and complications.
-Promotes quality patient care by serving as a resource to care providers of patients with diabetes
-Provides and role models indirect care of diabetic patients.
-Teaches patients, families and staff in formal and informal settings about the care needs of diabetic patients using appropriate methodology and strategies
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Nursing from an accredited academic institution. (preferred)
-Nursing\RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure or RD - Registered Dietitian
-CDCES - Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist required
-Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
