North Dakota State Government is Hiring a Seasonal Construction Inspector Near Bismarck, ND

Job Location:Bismarck, ND (plus field work at AML projects near Garrison, Velva and other sites in western ND as needed.)

Hiring Salary:$22/hour to $30/hour

Employment Type: Seasonal/Temporary full-time, non-benefitted

Summary of Work

The North Dakota Public Service Commission is seeking to hire a temporary Construction Inspectors to work in its Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Division. The mission of the AML Division is to eliminate the hazards associated with abandoned coal mines in the state to improve the safety and environment for the citizens of North Dakota. The position involves work at abandoned surface or underground coal mines. Work is generally in rugged and uneven terrain and working and driving near drilling, pumping and heavy equipment is required. The position involves work in all types of weather and walking on a variety of uneven or slippery surfaces. Lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and some manual labor (i.e. digging with a shovel, pounding in stakes and fence posts) may be necessary.

Start and end dates are flexible, but work is expected to begin mid-May and continue through September. Workdays and hours may be irregular depending on weather conditions and the contractor's schedule. Applicant must be able to work at the project sites throughout the project. Agency will pay overnight lodging near work sites during the work week as necessary. A State vehicle will be available for work-related travel. All applicants must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

Duties and Tasks

  • Serving as the on-site inspector for reclamation projects. This involves:
    • verifying the contract specifications and project design plans are followed by the contractor(s),
    • coordinating work between contractors,
    • documenting project progress and recording spatial and project data daily with field notebook, photos, video, ArcGIS Collector App, GPS, digital camera or other electronic device, and
    • quickly solving problems.
  • Receiving and verifying the accuracy of drill logs, grout logs or any other contractor supplied documents.
  • Conducting field reviews of abandoned mines at other locations as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Background in natural or earth sciences, construction management, engineering, or agricultural experience.
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Detail oriented with good observation and note taking skills.

College students who meet the minimum qualifications listed above are encouraged to apply. If the successful applicant is a college student that intends to work as a scientist, engineer, or technician in the field of mine land reclamation, the student is eligible to apply for a $2,500.00 scholarship from the National Association of Abandoned Mine Lands Program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising contractors.
  • Experience in reviewing project plans, specifications, maps and drawings.
  • Knowledge and use of technology devices such as tablet PCs, iPad, GPS and digital cameras.
  • Experience recording project data, taking notes and writing reports, including any work with databases and data entry.
