North Country Hospital is Hiring a Medical Assistant Near Newport, VT

Statement of Purpose

Coordinates and administers clinical care in a remote location for patients of all ages under the direction of the surgeon. Participates in patient education, works cooperatively with other patient team personnel in maintaining professional practice standards in the physician office setting and always striving to meet the goals of the clinic and North Country Hospital.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

Reports to Director of the Practice.

Receives patients, ascertains needs, obtains history of current complaint and details of past medical history and prepares patients for exam. Checks vital signs, allergy history and current medication list and recording all pertinent medical information into the electronic medical record according to established rules and requirements. Carries out clinical procedures and screening tests under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

Orders or enters prescriptions as directed by the surgeons.

Responsible for, but not limited to, rooming patients, obtaining vitals, review medication lists, review allergies, accurately obtain intake and reason for visit and confirmed and collaboration with the patients medical history within our Electronic Medical Record(EMR). Responsible for preparation and upkeep of examination rooms.

Provides for privacy, modesty and awareness of patient needs. Encourages participation in their planning of care and provides for their emotional needs.

Assists the physician with special tests and procedures. Participates in economical utilization of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.

Maintains the standard of care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital in compliance with OSHA, VOSHA and HIPAA regulations.

Uses the EMR to obtain patient information and edit any patient information in the EMR.

Will relay all patient concerns to the Practice Director.

Gives education and procedure instructions to the patient, when appropriate.

Provides necessary office forms to incoming patients and courteously assists patients.

Shows respect for all patients and explains the procedure in detail and encourages questions from patient.

Gives the patient every possible assurance regarding the procedure being performed; assists the patient in terms of any necessary self-care, and encourages the patient to take advantage of any support system that may be in place.

Communicates face to face with geriatric patients. Allows time for patient to respond to communication. Handles patient gently, and allows slower pace for treatment and care.

Speaks with patients or care providers who call the office with medical concerns, assessing patient with physical complaints and making appropriate recommendations based on that assessment, including recommending the patient be seen in the office or in the emergency room.

Follow up on telephone questions or concerns per patient messages in the EMR, as needed.

Make providers aware of all such decisions through discussion AND patient message within the EMR.

Receives, places and transfers calls using appropriate telephone etiquette; handles phone information requests with courtesy, accuracy and respect for patient confidentiality.

Schedules appointments as necessary.

Answers routine questions regarding departmental policies, operations and procedures. Refers patients to Physician when necessary.

Prepares, organizes and assists with daily clinic schedules.

Attends staff meetings, in-service training programs as directed.

Maintains patient confidentiality and follows department policies regarding release of information.

Complies with appropriate office dress code.

Respects and adheres to office policies regarding patient confidentiality both in and out of the office setting.

Conducts self in a professional manner. Demonstrates consideration for patients, co-workers and all other persons involved in the health care delivery system.

Establishes and maintains orderliness in the work place.

Displays initiative and responsibility for professional growth to achieve high standards of self improvement.

Acknowledges coworkers, incorporating both a cooperative effort and promoting teamwork.

Works with all staff and fills in where needed.

Works under the direction of the Physician and reports to the Practice Manager.

Adheres to the Standards of Behavior.

Working Conditions

Physical demands: Manual dexterity, fine motor skills and mobility are required. Have work may include moving up to 50lbs at one time, occasionally or seeks assistance from others; 10 to 25 lbs of force, frequently. Occasional, prolonged standing, walking, bending and changing from one position to another. Good or corrected vision and hearing. Ability to work with difficult or combative patients.

Exposures: May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. May be exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases, odorous and toxic chemicals, and working around ionizing radiation.

Job Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program. 1-2 years clinical experience in an medical office setting preferred. An ability to greet and interact with the public in a tactful, compassionate manner. An ability to work in a busy office and maintain a cooperative and professional attitude.

Computer Literacy: Patient charts are maintained in an electronic format. Documentation requires understanding of the program or the ability to learn and comprehend. Basic Windows PC knowledge.
