North Cascades Institute is Hiring a Seasonal Facilities Technician Near Diablo, WA

Job Description:


Summary of Position

North Cascades Institute seeks a qualified, enthusiastic professional to become a member of our Operations team at the Environmental Learning Center. Based at the Institute’s campus in the North Cascades National Park on Diablo Lake, this position assists with facilities for the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, which may serve up to 92 children and/or adults per day on a seven-day-a-week schedule, up to ten months a year. Supervised by the Facilities Manager, this position works closely with all other staff, partners and contractors to support a wide array of educational programs.


Responsibilities

Repair and Maintenance

  • Assist with prescribed major maintenance.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on buildings, equipment and furnishings as needed.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on company vehicles.
  • Assist with renovation, remodel and construction projects as assigned.
  • Maintain an orderly maintenance shop. Stock appropriate spare parts and tools.
  • Works directly with contractors SCL and Park Service when on site.

Administrative Tasks

  • Maintain inventory of equipment, supplies and parts as assigned.
  • Contribute to maintenance log keeping, such as the green slip system and major maintenance hours and general service logs.
  • Research solutions to maintenance issues as assigned.
  • Orders materials and supplies as requested.

Grounds and Restoration

  • Perform routine grounds keeping (removing weeds, fallen debris from trails, and snow.
  • Maintain recycling and composting materials.

Housekeeping

  • Cleans, sweeps/vacuums and mops office, classrooms, participant lodges and dining hall.
  • Cleans and restocks restrooms in the office, classroom area, dining hall and participant lodges.
  • Gathers, washes, folds and distributes laundry for participant lodges and other accommodations as assigned.
  • Cleans Institute vehicles as assigned.

General

  • Participate in general staff responsibilities such as staff meetings, hands to work, risk management, and hospitality.
  • Assists in other operational areas such as maintenance, food service, and customer service as assigned.
  • Participates in strategic planning, inter-office communications, budgeting, and other duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager, Operations Director, and/or Executive Director.
  • Willingness to commute to and work in a remote National Park including experiencing snow-covered roads, avalanches, wildfire, smoke, wild animals, and flooding.
  • Respond to emergencies at any hour.
  • Support equity initiatives at North Cascades Institute and actively contribute to NCI as a community of belonging that is welcoming and accessible to everyone. Develop a personal equity, diversity, and inclusion related goal(s) and track progress towards your goal(s) with your supervisor.
  • Other jobs as assigned.


Work Environment

  • Willingness to commute to and work in a remote National Park including experiencing snow-covered roads, avalanches, wildfire, smoke, wild animals, and flooding.
  • This job operates in an indoor and outdoor environment.

  • The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • This position requires the ability to often lift facility products and supplies, up to 50 pounds.

There is a possibility of returning to the position each year based on interest, experience, and program need.

Experience and Skills:

Required Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the North Cascades Institute.
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in general facilities maintenance.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks with exemplary time management skill and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to comply with a smoke- and drug-free work environment.
  • Ability to work and walk over uneven terrain.
  • Uses and maintains equipment properly as trained.
  • Ability to climb and work on a variety of ladders.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
  • Commitment to building a work environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all.
  • Recycling, composting and waste handling and snow removal experience.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to accommodate a varied work schedule including weekend work.
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and to work independently and reliably.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and light metal fabrication.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain.
  • Ability to model safe work habits and follow risk management practices.
  • Willing to work outdoors in all weather.
  • Final offers[1] of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check that may include employment history, national criminal background check, national sex offender registry search and a driving history check.
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record check must have no more than one moving violation in the past three years, no DUI, reckless driving or serious moving violations, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • First Aid/CPR/WFR training.
  • Experience leading volunteers in service projects.
Job Benefits:

This is a seasonal/temporary, full-time, non-exempt position. The wage is $17.00 per hour. Seasonal benefits include the following:

  • Sick Leave - 8 hours per month
  • Holiday Pay - 4 holidays between May 15 - September 15, 2023
  • Paid Service Days - 2 days total (16 hours)

Benefits are prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week.

Housing

Good quality housing is available through the Institute for $350/month, considerably below market rates. Private rooms in shared houses are sometimes available, but not guaranteed. In some cases, roommates in shared rooms may be required, at $175/month. The Institute has housing available in Marblemount or at the Learning Center on Diablo Lake. Pets are not allowed in the Institute’s campus housing, but a few rooms in a Marblemount house allow for pets. Smoking is not allowed in housing, during programs, or on the Institute’s campus.
