Campus Safety Officer (Part-time)

Description of Duties:

Security, Patrol, & Enforcement

  • Position will work various shifts upon request of the Director or Assistant Director as needed to supplement existing Campus Safety staff when additional CSOs are needed due to missed shifts (sick, vacation, etc), special events, critical weather events, etc. This may include shifts worked overnight, weekends, and holidays.
  • Inspects buildings and grounds to observe and secure facilities against fire and other situations

of potential loss to NCSSM – Durham.

  • Admits and releases authorized persons, removes unauthorized persons and provides access

control for approved personnel.

  • Responds, investigates, and documents disturbances and/or incidents, takes necessary and

appropriate actions to maintain order, safety and to protect property. Cooperates with campus

staff and external law enforcement agencies while conducting investigations. Testifies in court, if

applicable or required.

  • Respond to fire alarms including smoke and trouble alarms. Document causes of alarms and forward information to the appropriate entity. Replace and program broken or malfunctioning smoke detector heads. Perform basic operation of fire panels.
  • Provides escort services as requested for students and visitors to NCSSM – Durham facilities and

parking lots.

  • Participates in campus-wide events that enhance the Campus Safety Department’s interaction

and visibility amongst the campus community.

  • Special assignments including staffing of external/internal events and protecting NCSSM –

Durham equipment and property.

  • Is required to operate NCSSM – Durham vehicles including, but not limited to vans, UTV’s, and

any other motorized vehicles safely.

  • Participate in the upkeep of the NCSSM fleet of vehicles.

Data Analysis/Reports

  • Modify, retrieve and track incident, hazard, statistical and other data, and to compose and

prepare correspondence, surveys, memoranda, routine reports and other written material.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge – Technical: Understanding of protective, security, and enforcement practices. Knowledge and skill in basic first aid. Ability to apply considerable knowledge of property security and enforcement procedures. Thorough knowledge of the policies, rules, and regulations applicable to the property being guarded, sufficient to explain, apply, and enforce the policies, rules, and regulations. Organizational awareness and working knowledge of the infrastructure of the assigned area. Proficiency in using a variety of security and enforcement equipment, which may include parking meters, vehicle boots, gates, alarm panels, radios, cameras, and electronic ticketing devices. Ability to use the full functionality of security/surveillance systems. May require ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment. Ability to keep abreast of developments in security practices.
  • Security, Patrol, & Enforcement: Ability to patrol, monitor, and guard an area with a higher assessed risk. Ability to issue warnings or citations. Ability to assist in emergency response. Ability to provide support for special events; ability to control and direct traffic of people and vehicles; ability to erect barricades; ability to provide motorist assistance.
  • Decision Making: Ability to analyze situations in order to make quick, sound decisions; ability to recognize critical incidents; ability to initiate action based upon acquired information and knowledge of operating procedures.
  • Communication: Ability to listen and understand messages and instructions from others. Ability to gather information as needed. Ability to transmit radio messages using established protocols and procedures. Ability to provide routine responses to general requests for information. Ability to maintain logs and records. Ability to acquire basic understanding of working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, emergency response personnel, and the general public.

Minimum Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Must be able to patrol the interior and exterior of facilities. Must be able to ascend/descend stairs.

Valid North Carolina driver’s license or valid out-of-state driver’s license and the ability to receive a North Carolina driver’s license with sixty (60) days of employment.

Current valid CPR certification or ability to become certified within sixty (60) days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior work history of campus safety, security, military, or law enforcement is preferred.

Demonstrates a high degree of ethical behavior and adheres to the standards and regulations of the NCSSM-Durham environment.

Dedicated and committed to assisting others with the ability to work with diverse populations and personalities.

Cooperative, collaborative, and inclusive team player.

Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and daily responsibilities.

Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrates solid judgment in the everyday work environment.

Must be flexible to work varying work schedules depending on NCSSM – Durham Campus Safety Department needs.

Must possess the ability to create concise and comprehensive written reports and other types of institutional documentation as necessary while applying principles and correct usage of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
