North Carolina Dept of Transportation is Hiring a Bridge Inspection Supervisor I Near Wake, NC

Description of Work

Salary Grade: NC16 Salary Range - $54,197.00 - $94,844.00

Serves as the regional bridge inspection supervisor coordinating, directing, scheduling, and reviewing the work of five two-man above water inspection teams that conduct inspections on all types of structures in a specific geographical area of the state. Reviews and approves inspection reports for accuracy, completeness, and quality. Work in an outside environment where there is exposure to spiders, insects, snakes, and poisonous plants. Requires working in situations that are hazardous in nature such as traffic congestion, working on slopes, climbing of high steel, working in confined areas, and working above water on scaffolds or the snooper crane at considerable heights. Preference will be given to applicants with bridge safety inspection experience and progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance, major steel or concrete bridges or other structures. Performs QA/QC inspections in the region. Evaluates employee’s performance, and technically trains and develops employees. Other duties include training new inspectors, scheduling and planning the team’s activities in conformance with FHWA compliance deadlines. Location of work: Buncombe and surrounding counties, office based in Area A.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Completion of NBIS Two Week Bridge Inspection Course (FWHA-NHI-130055)
  • Experience with Topside Bridge Inspection including Bridges, Pipes, Signs and Culverts
  • Experience with Bridge Inspection Equipment, i.e. Hydra Platforms, Man Lifts, Snooper Trucks and Boats
  • Experience in drafting, sketching and report writing.
  • Experience coordinating, directing, scheduling, and reviewing work of others.
Additional Expectations:

Considerable knowledge of Federal and State bridge inspection standards, principles, techniques, procedures and equipment; bridge construction and material characteristics; and bridge designs and construction, maintenance or repair principles or procedures. Considerable knowledge of applicable testing equipment. Ability to supervise, train and coordinate the work of subordinate inspectors. Ability to review and evaluate program efficiency. Physical ability to climb ladders, scaffolds, access equipment and bridge structures. Ability to interpret plans and specifications. Ability to compute areas and volumes. Ability to keep accurate notes and records. Ability to make detailed sketches. Ability to make accurate observations and complete standard forms. Ability to write narrative reports. Ability to perform work while exposed to varying climatic conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive experience in the design, construction or maintenance of major concrete or steel structures; or Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive experience in the design, construction or inspection of major concrete or steel structures; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive experience in the design, construction or inspection of major concrete or steel structures; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
Necessary Special Requirements Successful completion of FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training and FHWA approved tunnel inspection training.
