It is full-time (40 hours per week) with
State Benefits.
This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The Chemist II position is a professional chemist position requiring the application of established chemical testing methodology and theory related to analytical, organic, and physical chemistry.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyses requiring specialized interpretive skills and utilizing complex analytical instruments that are used within the work unit.
  • Participate in all aspects of PFAS analyses, data management, and sample preparation.
  • Maintenance of complex analytical systems and instrumental analysis via liquid chromatography / tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography / tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS.)
  • Recognize and correct problems encountered in analyses.
  • Record completed data into the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Review for accuracy and validate data generated by other chemists in the PFAS unit.

Recruitment Range: $59,752 - $69,225

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Documented experience with federal rules and state regulations associated with water quality.
  • Documented experience with scientific methodology and/or of laboratory safety practices.
  • Documented experience performing and/or reporting complex standardized or non-standardized laboratory tests and/or procedures.
  • Documented experience analyzing results, interpreting methodology, understanding, and/or solving theoretical problems.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive chemistry laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
