Description of Work

The Administrative Specialist I (Medical Records Assistant) is located at Harnett CI in Lillington, NC. Harnett Correctional Institution houses up to 988 male offenders in a medium custody facility.

Employees at this level perform independently a variety of tasks within specific work guidelines. The Medical Records Assistant position requires general knowledge of medical office practices and procedures to review, verify, complete, record, and/or balance records, reports and figures. The Medical Records Assistant reports to the Nurse Supervisor. This position is responsible for maintaining medical records in a confidential manner and performing duties according to policy and procedures.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ordering and keeping inventory of medical supplies.
  • Scheduling medical appointments for offenders.
  • Effectively demonstrate good judgment when communicating with staff, offenders, and the general public.

The role is different from the Administrative Associate because fewer general office or administrative tasks are performed. Examples of the areas of specialization in this class include, but are not limited to, payroll, student services, accounting, medical records, call center, statistical, and human resources.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
**Vacancy anticipated for 5/6.

The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess of the following:

  • Documented experience performing administrative functions in an office setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in organization, retention, review and filing of records.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
