Norman Howard School is Hiring a HS Math Teacher, 2024-2025 School Year Near Rochester, NY

Teach students with learning disabilities the subject of mathematics using various instructional strategies and programs. Mathematics will be taught in a safe and supportive classroom environment and will foster cooperative social behaviors.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction, individually and in groups, in mathematics.
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences that allow all children to build upon their prior knowledge and current skill levels.
  • Use a variety of formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and achievement of the instructional objectives and IEP goals in math.
  • Observe and evaluate students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical health. Document student learning through the use of portfolios and records, as requested.
  • Confer with administration to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Establish and carry out rules for behavior to foster and maintain appropriate behavior, both in the classroom and within the school community.
  • Communicate to parents the level of student achievement and progress toward established classroom, school and state standards and students’ IEP goals.
  • Confer with parents or guardians, administration, counselors and other professionals to resolve behavioral and academic problems.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and school policy.
  • Work constructively with colleagues and others for the purpose of improving the quality of students’ behaviors and academic success.
  • Participate in school activities and events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain professional confidentiality concerning individual student data and achievement.
  • Maintain professional competence and skills through in-service education, consultation with administration and colleagues, independent study and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Maintain a high level of professional integrity.
  • Communication and problem skills needed to handle classroom situations and to work effectively with parents/guardians on student issues.
  • Organizational management and planning skills.
  • Written communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills. Ability to deliver clear, cohesive instruction.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, New York State Certification in Mathematics Education 5 – 9 or 7 – 12, and special education (or a working knowledge of special education practices), and/or Masters in Mathematics.
  • NYS provisional or professional certification in teaching field.
  • Prior experience teaching math to adolescents with learning disabilities preferred.
  • Able to work some flexible hours to accommodate parent/guardian meetings, school activities, and other mandated events/meetings.

Salary:

  • $41,152 - $58,618/year based on experience
