Norfolk Public School District is Hiring a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher | SY 2024-2025 Candidate Pool Near Norfolk, VA

Full-Time and Permanent; Exempt; 7.33 Hours/Day; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and eligible for, or in possession of, appropriate Virginia Teaching Certificate.
  • Tuberculin Skin Test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
  • Demonstrates considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
  • Has the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports.
  • Effectively interacts with pupils, colleagues, administrators and classified employees.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of personal computers and graphing technologies.

Nature of Position

  • Teaches concepts and skills in balancing work and family, foods and nutrition, clothing and textiles, home management, child care and developments, housing and decorating careers, hospitality and food, family relationships, consumer education and career education to secondary pupils, utilizing the course of instruction approved by appropriate authorities.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Organizes class activities so that preparation, instruction or laboratory work, and clean-up activities can be accomplished within allotted class time.
  • Demonstrates skill techniques in work and family studies and prepare appropriate instruction aids and display materials to enhance learning.
  • Provides individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, safe and productive environment in the laboratory-classroom.
  • Selects and requisitions books, equipment and instructional aids. Maintains inventory records and purchases groceries and other supplies as required.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property and makes minor repairs or requests repairs to tools and equipment as needed.
  • Instruct pupils in use, care and safe operation of household equipment and appliances to ensure safety of pupils.
  • Maintains professional competence through inservice educational activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Evaluates each pupil’s progress in performance, knowledge and skills.
  • Maintains current career and technical information for pupils interested in professional careers and resource materials for caring for the home.
  • Identifies pupils’ needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities (FCCLA/HERO).
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  • Participates cooperatively with the principal or designee to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Conducts a follow-up of each career and technical education program completer within six months of graduation.
