Associate Director of Bands - Niles Community Schools

REQUIRED: Michigan Teacher Certification (JQ or JX in Music Education)

PREFERRED:

  • Successful teaching experience
  • Demonstrate expertise and knowledge in all facets of teaching instrumental music

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Team teach middle school bands with the Director of Bands.
  • Inspire young musicians to continue in band and show them the benefits to their success.
  • Establish classroom procedures and routines. Monitor student progress and establish academic requirements for each class.
  • Coordinate and supervise extracurricular activities for students such as local parades, concerts, and festival participation.
  • Establish and maintain an electronic instrument inventory and music library.
  • Coordinate fundraisers for music department use.
  • Create and implement rigorous lesson plans, including necessary accommodations for students as needed.
  • Maintain middle school MSBOA membership requirements. 
  • Communicate and form trusting relationships with both students and parents.
  • Team teaching duties include the fall marching season, evening rehearsals, home football games, local parades, attending festivals and competitions during both concert and marching season, and attending graduation season requirements. Other activities as needed.
  • Assist Director of Bands with daily rehearsals at the high school level. This includes running sectionals, taking full band rehearsals when needed, and building a lasting relationship with the high school band members and families.
  • Form a strong relationship with the Band Booster organization and participate in monthly meetings.

PROGRAM HISTORY:

The Niles Community Schools Band Program has a vibrant history. Over the last 6 years, there has been massive growth, doubling in size with over 400 students participating in 6th-12th grade. The bands are active members in our community, participating in parades, festivals, and actively participate in Michigan Band and Orchestra Association.
