The Technician, Fabricator at Nextran Truck Centers is a skilled position that is responsible for constructing and manufacturing metal parts and products for our customer’s Medium & Heavy-Duty Trucks. This position reports to the Shop Foreman.

Essential Duties

  • Performs work as outlined on work order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
  • Marks cutting lines on material
  • Produces strong, clean, polished welds. Confirms all parts are properly fitted, aligned and screwed in.
  • Welds parts in flat, vertical and/or overhead positions.
  • Follows blueprints and determines material measurements.
  • Conducts tests to check weld quality and to ensure strength and tolerance of welds.
  • Uses precision measuring tools to inspect grooves and angles.
  • Documents all work performed.
  • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals.
  • Understands, keeps abreast of, and complies with federal, state and local regulations such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-To-Know, etc.
  • Operates all tools/equipment in a safe manner and reports any safety issues immediately to management.

Skills and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Basic computer skills
  • 1 years of welding experience preferred
  • Must have own set of tools
  • Familiarity with common welding tools and procedures, including MIG welding, metal fabrication, grinding and finishing metals. Welder certification a plus
  • Ability to stand, crouch, and lift heavy equipment
  • Blueprint reading and knowledge of common welding symbols

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations with only limited resources. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Use of torque wrenches, air powered tools or hand tools.
  • Use of arms in a raised position above shoulder level for prolong periods of time. Use of creeper or rolling device to enable tech to work underneath vehicle.
  • The employee frequently is required to walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is required to stand and sit for extended periods of time (hours) while making repairs.
  • Entry or exit from the cab of the vehicle.
  • Climb to a safe position to access the engine compartment area, firewall or roof of a vehicle to perform repairs.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to push/pull large tool chest from vehicle to vehicle
