American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is Hiring a Project Director Near Washington, DC

Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Director to join our Inclusive STEMM Ecosystems for Equity & Diversity (ISEED) department!

Located in AAAS's Washington, DC, headquarters, this Project Director for Disciplinary Transformation reports to the Deputy Director of SEA Change , a program in the Inclusive STEM Ecosystems for Equity & Diversity (ISEED) unit within the Office of Science, Policy and Society Programs.

What You'll Do

Supporting the Deputy Director's vision, operation, and strategic direction for SEA Change, this position provides consistent communication and strong collaboration to achieve project goals. Specifically, this position will provide leadership through the following functions:

  • In collaboration with the Deputy Director, harness expertise in disciplinary transformation to develop and refine processes, materials, and guidance related to Disciplinary Awards. Ensure the disciplinary awards processes achieve a balance between being consistent for impact and flexible to work across multiple disciplinary societies who will administer the Awards.
  • Support the launch of multiple new Disciplinary Award pilots leveraging the lessons learned from the Physics and Astronomy SEA Change program.
    • Perform outreach and recruitment to disciplinary associations through convenings and leveraging professional networks to encourage formation of committees for a Disciplinary Award pilot.
    • Provide administrative support to formalize understandings between disciplinary associations and AAAS, provide formal committees with mini-grants to support their work, and assist with any honoraria or travel support stipends associated with the pilots.
    • Provide consistent and timely support to the various Disciplinary Award programs.
    • Accompany Disciplinary Award committee staff on site visits as reasonable and appropriate.
    • Ensure integrity and consistency of the SEA Change brand, including monitoring Disciplinary Award committee and program use of logos, messaging to participants and media, and adherence of any formal understandings between AAAS and disciplinary associations.
    • Develop a revenue stream within the disciplinary awards structure to cover the costs associated with the SEA Change Initiative's technical assistance, R&D, and brand.
  • Work collaboratively with SEA Change leadership to create new documentation and materials and refine existing materials for Disciplinary Award programs and participants.
    • Develop a Disciplinary Award program playbook with guidance on formation of disciplinary committees, development of charters, and various processes related to onboarding and participation of departments or colleges in a Disciplinary Award pilot.
    • Provide thought partnership in work to refine the core criteria and guidelines for Disciplinary Award self-assessment and action-planning, reconvening a working group of external SMEs to provide guidance as-needed.
    • Identify gaps in AAAS support of Disciplinary Award programs and work with SEA Change team to address those gaps.
  • Work collaboratively and generatively with entire SEA Change team to fulfill the program mission, including but not limited to:
    • Active participation in visioning and production of deliverables related to Membership, Awards, Community, and/or the Institute.
    • Proactive analyses of ways that Disciplinary Award materials, processes, or methods can be applied to other facets of the SEA Change program.
    • Development and facilitation of in-person and virtual workshops or meeting sessions under the SEA Change program umbrella.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in STEMM, Education, or related field, preferred; or related experiences
  • 5 or more years experience in program development and implementation with responsibilities including budget management, assessment of program impact, and project management
  • Demonstrated experience working in STEMM Education or STEMM Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion efforts
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in disciplinary transformation efforts.
  • Demonstrated experience writing, receiving, and managing grants and budgets
  • Preferred experience with STEMM policy and initiatives related to education, diversity & inclusion

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is between $80,000 and $85,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, and life insurance, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
