Overview

NexGen is looking to add a Senior Steel Estimator at their Phoenix, AZ office.

Qualifications

Position Summary

This position serves as the primary point of contact for all preconstruction efforts within the organization. Responsibilities range from initial contact with GC for scope/schedule information, coordinating with other estimators and project teams, reaching out to subs/vendors for pricing, building and reviewing final estimates, creating bid forms and scope letters for final submittals, and maintaining progress status of all projects that the organization is pursuing.

  • Structural Steel Estimator - Responsible for preparing detailed estimates of structural steel projects including labor, equipment and material costs. Must have a good understanding of steel fabrication processes and materials, as well as experience in developing accurate cost estimates.
  • Must have a good understanding of erection requirements and procedures to be able to provide accurate cost estimates associated with rigging, bracing and general erection of structural and miscellaneous steel.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management or a minimum of ten years’ experience in the construction industry, along with a minimum of five years of experience in estimating structural steel or miscellaneous metals.
  • Candidate must be physically located in Phoenix, AZ office.
  • Knowledge of design principles and engineering specifications related to structural steel.
  • Proficiency in using software programs related to structural steel quantity survey, material take-off and estimation.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, specifications and other technical documents.
  • Understanding of basic geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with other team members to ensure accuracy and efficiency in projects.
  • Communicates well both verbally and in writing, creates accurate and punctual reports, shares information and ideas with others, has good listening skills
  • Ability to balance and prioritize workload amongst several different projects at one time
  • Exhibits innovative and creative ways to provide value engineering solutions.
  • Attentive to detail and accuracy, is committed to excellence, looks for improvements continuously, and exhibits consistent discipline.
  • Breaks down problems into smaller components, understands underlying issues, can simplify and process complex issues, understands the difference between critical details and unimportant facts.

The most important skill for a structural steel estimator is the ability to accurately estimate the cost of materials and labor. This requires a deep knowledge of materials and labor costs, as well as the ability to calculate the amount of time and resources necessary to complete the project. In order to do this successfully, the estimator must be able to analyze a project from start to finish, identify potential problems and develop strategies for overcoming them.

Estimator must be able to communicate effectively with other professionals involved in the project, such as architects and engineers, in order to ensure that the project is completed on budget and on time. By leveraging their knowledge of materials, labor costs and project management, structural steel estimators are essential for successful project completion. What we expect… (Essential Functions)

  • Reviews data and drawings to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists of cost estimates.
  • Compute cost factors and prepare estimates used for purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work, preparing bids, change order pricing, vendors or subcontractors’ agreement, and determining cost effectiveness.
  • Coordinates with customers, subcontractors, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates.
  • Interaction with subcontractors and vendors to help maintain bid list and contact information.

While performing the duties of this position, the team member is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and arms, reach, and talk or hear. They are regularly required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs, and occasionally lift or move up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities include accurate near and distant vision.

Frequently in a normal office environment where noise level is moderate and temperature/humidity is controlled. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions. May be exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold and/or heat, risk of electrical shock, explosives and vibrations. Noise level on the job site is normally moderate to loud. Overtime will be required. Local and National travel to projects will be required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
